15% of female attorneys reported that female litigants or witnesses were frequently sexually harassed verbally. And 47% of female attorneys said that judges ‘sometimes or often’ made jokes that were demeaning to women, both in the courtroom and in chambers.
Part X- The New Boys: Carrie’s Story
In conclusion of this series, I want to focus on the following powerful statement made by Basas:
“Had well-intentioned firms steered them in that direction and away from their doors, or had the experience of discrimination based on disability left them committed to the disability rights fight? Unfortunately, not much information existed to clarify these anecdotal observations and collecting that data would have to be delayed to another day.”
Because of their disabilities, women in the legal profession had been turned away from many job opportunities as well as opportunities to advance their careers. The thing that I love about Carrie’s statement is that she chooses to focus on what being turned away from those seemingly great jobs did to change the future of women attorneys with disabilities. Instead of focusing on what might have been lost, Carrie focuses on all that was gained.
