Mary Ross, lawyer (Emily Rose) The Thanksgiving House / Legally Tender (2013)
Mary Ross: I need you to research eminent domain law. Federal takings, pull me everything you can on it. Specifically in reference to historical landmarks. Find me policy, precedent and practice. Federal, state and county. Plymouth.
Victoria: Is there a problem with the Plymouth house?
Mary Ross: Not yet. But if there is, it will be over my dead body.
— Victoria: How’s it looking?
Mary: *scroffs* Like the government’s guidelines for determing historical value of a site are stringent and challengeable.
–
Mary Ross: You’re not allowed on my property without my written permission. If you or anybody else tries to lay claim to any piece of my property for public use, or any other use whatsoever, I will take you to court.
—
Mary Ross: You still haven’t addressed the fundamental issue, that by removing the materials from my property, your client, has set in motion a process, by which the government may very well be able to lay claim to my property underneath the doctrine of eminent domain. – We’ll let the court to decide that.
Parker Mather: Taking a suit to court costs a lot of time and money.
Mary Ross: Both of which I have plenty of.
—
Mary Ros: Are you trying to keep your enemies closer, Everett?
–
Everett Mather: What gets you up in the morning? Law?
Mary Ross: I guess. –I guess I would have to say autonomy.
–
Mary Ross: I’ve gone nose to nose with some really ferocious litigators but high school students? *yikes* Sure, why not.
[tells a story about clerking for Ruth Bader Ginsburg at Supreme Court, and cockroaches]
–
Mary Ross: I think we have to watch our backs, though, because Rick, he is up to something. But don’t worry, I know a good lawyer who can hit him off at the pass.

I’m not a Ross. I’m a Resinski. My grandfather changed his name when he was processed on Ellis Island.

For once I’m totally on board with the sleezy rich city boyfriend in this knockoff Hallmark movie. He’s excited about her winning her case, reacts appropriately when he hears her aunt died & left her a house (“My condolences, but congrats on your good fortune”), & volunteers to go with her to check the place out (“You’ll just be helping me count forks & knives” “I’m in the restaurant business. I love to count forks & knives”)
