Plot Synopsis: As the Christmas party for a book publishing company approaches, editor Maggie volunteers to help her boss Amanda find a date. Matchmaking is a bit of a hobby for Maggie, but she is thrown off her game when Jaxson, her old boyfriend from her college years, shows up at her work—as a newly signed, successful author. Maggie would love to deny she feels anything for him still, but Jaxson isn’t making it easy. She’ll have to face her decisions of the past, along with Amanda eyeing Jaxson, to bring together the perfect matches at Christmas. Matchmaker Christmas is produced by Candlelight Media Group. (x)

In My Humble Opinion: I never read Persuasion. I saw the 2007 movie version once during my senior year of high school because I had a crush on Rupert Penry-Jones. I didn’t retain a lot of it because I was too busy being into Rupert Penry-Jones. What I’m saying is that I am not a Persuasion expert.

Still, I am pretty sure that this movie is a Persuasion knock-off. There’s a girl who reconnects with a boy. They used to be engaged but her family told her that they shouldn’t be engaged, so she broke it off. Like... that’s Persuasion. Right? People love Persuasion.

And maybe those people will get more out of Matchmaker Christmas than I did. 

Matchmaker Christmas is a very low energy movie about low energy people doing matchmaking and talking about writing books. At no point do you think anyone is happy to be there making this movie. It’s all very dull. I watched this at 6:00 PM and I felt exhausted at the end of it because it was that low energy. Like Christmas movie ASMR.

But maybe it’s different if you read Persuasion. Maybe you can meaningfully engage with it then. I would not know.

Watch If: You want to have a purpose when you are at a party, if you have social butterfly charm or if you think Christmas is a genre.

Skip If: You are not turned off by a height difference, if you read fantasy books or if sleigh rides are a crucial part of your action novel writing process.

Dean: He seems nice, he's your type, right? 

Maggie Shaw: No, no. 

Dean: So what happened with you guys? 

Maggie: Nothing. 

Dean: I guess not. When were you engaged?

Maggie: It was my second year of college. 

Dean: Was he a jerk or something? 

Maggie: It's complicated. 

Dean: So why didn't you marry him? 

Maggie: There were so many obstacles. 

Dean: Okay, like what? 

Maggie: For starters I got the scholarship to Oxford and I really wanted to go for it and he got upset and so we broke up and I mean, you know. 

Dean: Yeah, yeah, it sounds like it wasn't meant to be. 

Maggie: And then was it my parents? No, actually, my whole family, they had issues with his aspirations to become an author. 

Dean: That's funny, considering. 

Maggie: Mhmm. Yeah so there was the age thing, and there's the scholarship thing. We were just too young to be in love. 

Dean: Like Romeo and Juliet? Or Bella and Edward. Wesley and Buttercup. 

Maggie: Wait. Except for the fact that all those people you listed were actually in love. 

Dean: Like Samson and Delilah. 

Maggie: Bingo. 

[Dean laughing]

--- Jaxson Jones: Maggie. 

Maggie: What are you doing here? 

Jaxson: I'm waiting for you. 

Maggie: Why? 

Jaxson: Well, I want to talk about, listen, if we're gonna be working together, it can't be like that. 

Maggie: I don't know what you mean. 

Jaxson: Yes you do. But we're not handling this right and if we don't address it, it's gonna get worse. 

Maggie: Look, Mr. Jones, I really appreciate you... 

Jaxson: That. Mr. Jones? Come on. 

Maggie: Jaxson, I can't just pretend that this isn't weird. 

Jaxson: Fine, let's just admit that it's weird.

Maggie: I don't know how that's any better. 

Jaxson: Well, we're grown up now, right? We can say the past is in the past and we'll move forward. 

Maggie: I think that's a lot easier said than done. 

Jaxson: I think we're strong enough to try. So what do you say? Can we start over? 

Maggie: Okay. 

Jaxson: Great. So, why don't we try all this again another day. I'll bring my story notes and we can look them over. 

Maggie: Yeah, okay. 

Jaxson: How about tomorrow? 

Maggie: Yeah, that's fine. 

Jaxson: Good night, Maggie.

Maggie: Right. Okay. Date options for Amanda. Mmm. Alan. Who else? Oh, shoot.[memory lane about Jaxson]--Hey, Amanda. 

Amanda: Oh hey, you cycling today? 

Maggie: No, actually I was gonna stay for a run but I was hoping to catch you on a break because I have a list of 11 guys that I think will be great for you. 

Amanda: 11? [Yeah.] I don't think I have time to meet that many guys before Christmas. 

Maggie: Well no, I brought you pictures. 

Amanda: You have random men's pictures? 

Maggie: They're not random, okay? I know each of these guys, and besides, you know, photos, those aren't really hard to get. 

Amanda: I'm surprised you went through all this hassle. 

Maggie: Oh it wasn't a hassle at all. There you are. 

Amanda: Whoah. 

Maggie: Okay, so I know that there's more to a person than a photo. So think of this sort of like a, 

Amanda: Menu? 

Maggie: A sampling, okay. And I can tell you a little bit about each one. 

Amanda: Do you have a pen? 

Maggie: Yeah I do. Where'd it go, there. There you go. Wait, don't you wanna know about, okay. 

Amanda: How's that? 

Maggie: Well, I'm actually surprised there's any left. 

Amanda: Let's keep it reasonable. 

Maggie: Okay so what I'll do is I'll go ahead and set up a time for you to meet each of them. 

Amanda: Meet them? 

Maggie: Yeah like one on one, but yeah. 

Amanda: Okay, something quick, a coffee date. 

Maggie: Coffee, really? There's not really potential there to have like a deep conversation. 

Amanda: I don't really have time for these things. Is there any way you could set them all up on the same day? 

Maggie: Well that's not really romantic. You know, you're like oh my gosh, it's so nice to meet you, I love your eyes, next! 

Amanda: Have I mentioned that I don't enjoy dating? 

Maggie: Have I mentioned I think it's 'cause you haven't met the right guy yet? 

Amanda: Of course. 

Maggie: Okay, so I'll go ahead and I'll set you up. 

Amanda: Thank you. 

Maggie: Bye.

Amanda: Please tell me he's not in a red suit. 

Maggie Shaw: No, you're meeting him at the coffee shop. There he is. 

Amanda: Oh. 

Maggie: Yeah, better than his picture, right? 

Amanda: Which one is he? 

Maggie: Alan. 

Amanda: Alan, okay. 

Maggie: Yup, all right, go ahead. 

Amanda: Wait, aren't you gonna introduce me?

Maggie: [laughing] no. No, if I get dragged in there you'll use me as a crutch. Come on, go ahead, you'll be fine. Okayyyy.---Oh, I forgot about the height difference.[sighs] It's not gonna work.--Right, so how did it go? 

Amanda: He's nice. 

Maggie: Okay, look, that was my fault. I didn't really think through Alan as an option or if you liked a certain height. 

Amanda: We were in two different atmospheric levels. 

Maggie: Look, don't worry about it, all right? Look, Steven is next. He's super nice. He loves books, he reads all the time. You guys are gonna have a lot to talk about. 

Amanda: [sighs] Fine.

Jaxson Jones: Maggie? 

Maggie: Jaxson. 

Jaxson: What are you doing here? 

Maggie: I'm supervising, I guess. Amanda's meeting somebody so I'm just making sure it's all okay. 

Jaxson: And does she know you're here watching her? 

Maggie: Yeah. I'm not crazy. I'm actually, I'm setting her up. It's kind of this hobby of mine. 

Jaxson: Huh, that's new. At least in the last 15 years. 

Maggie: Yeah I like pairing up friends that I think will get along. Yeah it's kind of fun.

Jaxson: Any of them work out? 

Maggie: Yeah, actually six couples are married. 

Jaxson: Really? 

Maggie: Yeah. A few of them are still dating, so. 

Jaxson: Any breakups? 

Maggie: One or two. 

Jaxson: So how are they doing?[]

Maggie: I think they're doing okay. Uhoh. That doesn't look good. 

Jaxson: Yeah it doesn't look promising. 

Maggie: Yeah, I should go save her. 

Jaxson: Better luck next time. 

Maggie: Thank you. 

Jaxson: It was good to see you. 

Maggie: You too. --

Amanda: Maybe we should get in line and tell Santa I need a date for Christmas. 

Maggie: Okay look, I think if you just looked at some of these guys that you crossed out without meeting, 

Amanda: No offense, but, how did any of your friends ever get together? 

Maggie: Sometimes it's a little bit of a you know, learning curve. Oh hey, here's Marvin. Okay, so he owns the cafe around the corner from work. He's super nice. 

Amanda: Maybe, start with the bad and then I can be pleasantly surprised.

Maggie: Oh. They're exchanging numbers. This is good. It's really good.--So you set up a second date? 

Amanda: Yes.

Maggie: When? 

Amanda: Thursday. 

Maggie: Okay, that's excellent. Isn't he nice? He's so nice. 

Amanda: Okay, don't get too crazy. Yes, Marvin is nice, and handsome. And I can respect him, unlike, 

Maggie: Steven, I know, I know. Okay so what can I do to help? 

Amanda: Marvin suggested a couple of options for dinner. Italian, a boutique Chinese place, or, 

Maggie: What? 

Amanda: Or he offered to make me dinner at his cafe. Is that weird? 

Maggie: No, it's not weird. That's romantic. None of those iffy waiters in loud, overcrowded restaurants. It's perfect, what time?

Amanda: 8:30. 

Maggie: Right, so the cafe closes at eight so it'll just be the two of you. He'll be cooking. Aww, pick that one. 

Amanda: What if it gets awkward? 

Maggie: Oh it won't, no. Marvin's really good at making people feel welcome and cared for. 

Amanda: Okay, if you're sure. 

Maggie: Totally sure.

Marvin: Hi, Maggie. 

Maggie Shaw: Hey. Listen, I have somebody that I want you to meet. 

Marvin: Oh, you always threaten that. 

Maggie: Marvin, you're gonna really like her. 

Marvin: Okay, just text me the details. 

Maggie: I will, okay. Here we go. 

Jaxson Jones: Still got that flair. 

Maggie: What? 

Jaxson: Social butterfly charm? Friends with everybody. 

Maggie: Oh I mean, yeah, I mean I guess so. All right, so, shall we? 

Jaxson: Yes. And I wasn't kidding about new genres for me. 

Maggie: Okay, what are you thinking? 

Jaxson: Christmas book. Obviously not for this year, but could be fun, right? 

Maggie: Yeah, I mean, Christmas, that seems to be a genre that other successful authors have crossed over to and done pretty well in so that'd be great. But you know, I think we're gonna need something else other than just Christmas. 

Jaxson: Oh, don't worry. I got more. Period piece. Character driven, one person struggle through the civil war. Ooh, and I also have a mystery that's set with a scientific background. 

Maggie: Oh no. 

Jaxson: Don't like it? 

Maggie: Oh, no, no, no, no, no. 

Nicole: Hi. Sorry to interrupt. I'm Nicole. 

Jaxson: Oh, I remember you just fine. 

Maggie: This is Jaxson. 

Nicole: Oh. What are you doing here? 

Jaxson: I'm working with Maggie's publishing house. 

Nicole: Oh, that's interesting. Doing what? 

Jaxson: He's an author, Nicole. 

Nicole: Wow, pulled that one off after all. You been writing long? 

Maggie: He's a bestselling author. 

Jaxson: I've been writing for a while. 

Nicole: Good for you. 

Maggie: Hey so we really need to get back to our meeting. 

Nicole: Sure, I'll call you later. 

Jaxson: It's good to see you again. 

Nicole: Mhmm. 

Jaxson: So, where were we? Scientific background.

Nicole: He's still just as smug as I remember him. I mean really, does 15 years or whatever do nothing to improve a person? 

Maggie: He wasn't smug, it was just work. 

Nicole: I'm just glad you listened to mom and dad and left him behind. [sighs] Are you listening? 

Maggie: Yes, yes Nicole. 

Nicole: He's still no good. 

Maggie: Look, you guys always love to say that but Jaxson never did anything wrong. 

Nicole: He was trying to hold you back. 

Maggie: By marrying me, really? 

Nicole: All I'm saying is don't do that wistful thing and look back at all of the good memories and forget the bad. 

Maggie: Okay and I'm just saying there really were no bad memories. You guys just never approved of, okay you know what, just forget it okay? He's an author, I'm an editor. It was just work. 

Nicole: I'm gonna hold you to that. 

Maggie: Okay. Good night, Nicole. 

Nicole: Good night.
