Leading the Dregs wasn't difficult. In fact, it was hardly any different to what he'd been doing as a lieutenant. Taking down some of the other Barrel bosses and pleasure houses, however, was far more difficult. Without his Wraith, obtaining information took far longer, and was oftentimes unsatisfactory at best. The fact he simply didn't trust anyone with something so valuable didn't help, either.
So it wasn't uncommon for Dirtyhands to do the work himself. He might not have Inej's acrobatic and stealth abilities, but he still had his talent for disguise and sleight of hand; the rest could be solved by picking locks and raiding documents in safes. Which meant that between leading the Dregs, running the Crow Club and gathering information he hardly ever took time to eat or sleep. If it hadn't been for Wylan, he might've forgotten about it altogether.
Today was no different. He'd staked out his next mark all night, completely forgetting about the fact he'd promised — well, promised was a strong word; he agreed if he had time — to go to the Kooperom for breakfast with Wylan.
If anyone would've suggested just a while ago that Kaz Brekker would ever be spending time with Wylan Van Eck alone, he would've wasted no time knocking some sense into them with his cane. But loneliness was a strong motivator. With Inej out at sea, Jesper back in Novyi Zem with his Da and Nina Saints knew where doing Saints knew what for King Nikolai, Wylan was the only Crow left. The only person he trusted. The only person he felt comfortable enough around.
"Oh, stop being so dramatic, Merchling. I told you I wasn't sure if I'd have the time. There's a lot on my plate at the moment." Shrugging off his coat, Kaz draped it over the back of his chair, before letting himself drop into it. He could feel exhaustion washing over him the second he was seated. Letting out a quiet sigh, he rubbed his face with the palms of his hands. "Can we go some other time? I need to look over the books before we open the Crow Club, and I need to brief a couple of my men on some things before they head out into the streets."
