also the new person i'm talking to is so beautiful, he looks like he jumped out of a caravaggio painting. and they think i'm the cool hot one. which is actually insane to me. know that i'm beaming a picture of them into your head (imagine lightly brown skin, lovely black curls just below his chin, and a meticulous little renaissance style goatee. i'm not kidding you when i say they look like the main romance option for the main character in a book). i wish i could draw. i wanna draw her so bad. but alas....

i promise i'm still around. i just was out of town last week and only really have the opportunity to write for a couple of hours once a week so i can only et trou so many replies at one time. BUT I'M STILL HERE AND DON'T PLAN ON GOING ANYWHERE ANY TIME SOON!!

HE'D DONE his best to ignore it . to pretend that it was just something that was going to go away . it had started so innocuous . just the occasional ache in his chest , usually in the middle of the night when he slept . nothing so bad as to make him cry out . it never lingered . but then . . . then the WEAKNESS started . a consistent fatigue that beleaguered him , as if his limbs were weighted and trying to keep him down . and then the pain in his chest got worse . it started to be something constant , and sometimes left him gasping for air .

naturally , he'd done his best to HIDE this all from zoya ( why worry her ? surely this wasn't anything for concern ) . but then , recently , on a walk by himself in the garden , his legs gave out from under him , and he swears , for just a moment , there were vines of thorns pinning him to the ground . he couldn't move , couldn't breathe and OH GOD I'M GOING TO DIE HERE - and then it was over . he was fine again .

except he isn't . he ISN'T fine , and he's finally admitting it himself . which means there's someone else he needs to admit it to . . .

❝ zoya ? ❞ he calls , head peeking into the war room . ❝ are you in here ? ❞

nikolai's  confusion  is  a  sight  she  doesn't  often  see.  she  might  rub  it  in  his  face  later,  depending  on  the  mood.  ❝  must  be  that  person  she's  working  with.  she'd  not  spare  details  if  we  sall  one  another...  yet  from  how  it's  written,  seems  it  would  be  dangerous  to  find  them  out.  ❞

finally,  she  grows  silent.  ❝  oh,  what  am  i  supposed  to  do  ?  i  hate  feeling  helpless.  ❞  zoya  can  neither  aid  nor  order  the  heartrender.  she  chews  on  her  lower  lip.  ❝  what  would  you  do  ?  ❞

HE CAN see anxiety settle over zoya and he steps closer to her , head bending to hers .

❝ we could order her home , ❞ he says , even though he knows they never would . even if nina weren't such an asset in the field , to bring her home now , when she's found LOVE of all things . . . whatever their feelings , it would simply be cruel . and he knows zoya loves the girl far too much for that .

❝ but , perhaps , a more SUITABLE solution would be to surreptitiously send someone to check on her . preferably in a way she doesn't notice , lest our next letter from her be one that would probably scorch our eyes to read . ❞

it's easy to tease like this with nikolai, because he knows zoya is not as sharp as she seems, he knows that her heart feels everything, beneath the surface. it isn't all that long ago that nobody knew that about her, the shards of ice she surrounded herself with keeping everyone at arm's length—but zoya has true friends, now. she has nikolai. who she does, in fact, love, even if he's extremely annoying sometimes.

❝ i'm going to poison your wine, ❞ she says with rolled eyes, raising a hand to buffet him with a wind, intentionally too gentle to do anything more than ruffle his hair.

HIS GRIN only widens at the buffet of his hair , at the threat she gives him .

He pulls his hands around, a small sack now sitting in the palm of his hand. Slowly, Morpheus pries it open, slipping a few fingers inside before pulling out black sand. It trickles off the tips of his index and middle finger, mixing with the air. A thickness settles over the room, windows going dark, lights dimming around them. " To keep away prying eyes... "

THE MAN only manages to unsettle him more , which just makes the demon more unsettled in turn . he can't know . there's no way he can know . so how . . . ?

the darkness that settles around them is so like the darkling's , nikolai's whole body tenses , half expecting him to appear from a doorway ( though , of course , nikolai would be able to feel it if he were here ) .

❝ and what services are those , exactly . . . ? ❞ he wants to maintain control , COMPOSURE . but saints this man is making it difficult .

HE IS a pest . playful and rambunctious and far too smart for his own good . even if that sometimes means doing things that are , theoretically , less than good for his health . like , perhaps , BOTHERING AN ANGRY OLD WOMAN .

❝ i heard you train the grisha children . in what ? what do you train them to do ? ❞ maybe he's just curious . maybe he wants to know if it's something he can learn too .

𝑯𝑬𝑹 𝑮𝑨𝒁𝑬 𝑾𝑨𝑺 𝑭𝑰𝑿𝑬𝑫 𝑼𝑷𝑶𝑵 𝑵𝑰𝑲𝑶𝑳𝑨𝑰. What a terrible fate it must be to have fight for control of your own body. She would not let her friend suffer, not when she has come to love him and his motley crew of misfits. She exhaled a calm breath through her nose. 

❝ You will not kill me.❞ She replied. 

❝ You couldn't really. You must remember this is a man made demon, it is weak in comparison to natural bone ones.❞ She explained, and sidestepped his bucking and moved to crouch down by his face, and struck the ground with the point of her blade and let it rest there. 

❝ Therefore, you can control it. You have it in you.❞  Her brows furrowed into a look of resolve. 

❝ Leash it like you would an unruly dog. It has fangs and claws, but so do you. Show it how hard you can bite.❞ 

She stood up then and picked up her blade.

SHE'S TOO bold . too bold by far . she's going to get herself killed . and it'll be his fault . a pained guttural groan is pulled from him , the sound wrenched from his throat .

❝ you're an idiot , ❞ he groans , unable to look at her face so close to his ( afraid he might try to swipe and claw it off ) . she moves away somewhat and he breathes the slightest sigh of relief . not that she's out of the danger . he can still feel the demon thrashing against him .

he wants to make a quip about metaphor hardly helping right now , but the demon makes another big play for control and nikolai has to focus , another agonized sound escaping him .

slowly . SLOWLY . so agonizingly slowly . . . nikolai is able to return to himself . the wings fold back into his back . the claws turn back to fingers . his eyes become hazel once again . the scars , however . THE SCARS REMAIN .

his clothes are tattered when he manages to push himself up from the ground . how there's anything of a shirt still remaining , he isn't sure , but even that is hanging on by a thread . he looks tired . he feels tired .

❝ you're an idiot , ❞ he says again , though it lacks any fire . ❝ i could have killed you . did you stop to think of how that would make ME feel ? ❞ it's mostly a tease , something to lighten the mood , but it's not entirely untrue .

nikolai feared for his country. he’d be a fool not to. but some part of  him, maybe the  p r i v a t e e r , MAYBE THE DEMON, maybe the prince who had clawed his way to the throne,   was   itching   for   a   f i g h t

today is like my only day of the week where i can do replies (school and work take up the whole rest of the week) but oh my god i'm so tired. how am i supposed to write creatively in these conditions???

HER VOICE reaches him before the sight of her does and he glances up , not having expected ( or really particularly wanted . . . ) anyone to find him out here . but then , HE'S THE KING . his absence was bound to be noticed eventually .

he slips his glove back over his hand as she comes into view . she's familiar but it takes his mind a longer moment than he'd like for him to recall her name .

❝ elspeth , ❞ he greets but doesn't stand . he looks down at his gloved hand , flexing and unflexing it for a moment before turning his attention back to her . ❝ you weren't enjoying the party ? ❞ he asks instead of answering .
