First results from the french legislative elections are in, and... that's pretty much what I expected.
The "resign so it has to be RN vs someone else" strategy worked very well for the left wing coalition and Macron's party, with most leftist votes going to Macron and vice versa. (And people say Macron is center-right...)
This resulted in the "far" right party, RN, losing a lot of seats that they were leading in. Hope they can keep going on that trend and win at some point, if only to mix up the political landscape. Still hoping we soon get one candidate that uses the fact that the political compass is shifted towards statism so much to differentiate themselves. Maybe appeal to the people that don't like hearing about new laws and new taxes all the time. It's clear that the "libertarian party" is functionally useless, with only two candidates, who each got about 0.30% of votes in their two jurisdictions.
While I'm writing this, I'm hearing Mélenchon (left coalition leader) say "There will be no tricks, no gimmicks, the president's party needs to admit that he was defeated". Which is funny, considering this is the man behind the "We'll resign so the people we don't like lose" trick.
And while writing about Mélenchon, I'm now hearing another speaker from his party say very clearly what they want to do from now on. She blames the rise of the far right on the fact that people are living paycheck to paycheck (true)... and then goes on to say only "they" have the solutions. Those solutions ? To "do more for equality", to "make the rich pay their fair share and give more to the poor" (not exactly what she said but I'm localizing).
I'm assuming what she means is that they'll try to raise taxes as much as possible to pay for social programs. Which will have the absolutely intended effect of making people pay more in taxes, making them poorer and more reliant on those social programs, and therefore less willing to vote for a party that wants those gone, even if taxes are reduced the same or more.
I think that's enough politics for one day, I'm gonna turn off the TV.
