Instead of something abandoned, let’s look back at some wonderful North Dakota history that has been preserved! It’s the Lehr Tabernacle! Something I had no idea existed until May. And something I’m so thankful I got to see! This is all thanks to the wonderful Donna who showed us around. Let’s go!
This is a very old building and the plans were, if I recall, straight from Germany. And when you first walk in, it’s quite striking. Even empty. Perhaps, especially empty.
When we walked in the only light came from the ceiling and the doorway we had just come through.
The place is, of course, round. And many walls are lined with names of people who contributed to or attended this place.
I was also told that this place was called the hay bale church or the straw church, I can’t remember which, because the floor was covered with hay/straw. It wasn’t yet cement.
Now, although rustic, it’s a little more modern than those days.
Isn’t this just beautiful?

So, so many names. Mostly German :) Very North Dakota.

I could visualize many old fashioned services here. Donna filled us in about camp meeting here. Can’t you just picture it?
I couldn't stop photographing the middle of the circle.
I had to get a shot of a hymn book.
It was so tattered. And I love the song “Showers of Blessing”
Willie Nelson sings it below.
More photos of the front.
You can feel the history in this place. I hope it lasts forever! I’m so glad that people maintain it and value it.
My dad actually pointed out something about this place that I completely agreed with. He said he could totally see this place as an old dance hall in the 20s - similar to a scene from “A River Runs Through It” with plenty of lights strung in the trees. Can’t you just see it?! I said I would totally re-do my wedding and have it here instead. Throw open all those window! String the trees in lights!
Then it was on to the other buildings at the camp. But I will say this one was my favorite :) Stay tuned!
