Former Philippine Senator Leila de Lima, who has been imprisoned for over five years on drug charges, has been granted bail by a court in Manila. The court decision comes after prosecutors failed to present sufficient evidence to justify her continued detention. De Lima, a vocal critic of President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, was […]

The Senate may have spoken too soon in commending the Department of Justice for pursuing charges against police personnel involved in the killing of Albuera, Leyte mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. last year.
ATTN: TIME MAGAZINE Ambassador Samantha Power, you wrote the following about Leila de Lima in that TIME feature: “Most opposition politicians have kept their heads down, knowing Duterte is both terrifyingly brutal and massively popular. But Senator de Lima has become Duterte's most vocal critic— a role her friends call suicidal." If you were fair, you would have not excluded the reason why she was arrested (violations of the anti-drug law) and why very few Filipinos are sympathetic to her cause. Further, you portrayed de Lima as an Icon of Human Rights, as a brave opposition figure standing up to a strongman at the risk of political persecution. You as former Ambassador to the United Nations should know how the UN itself ruled against the Aquino Government's unjust arrest and detention of former President Gloria Arroyo. Following due process and with Amal Alamuddin-Clooney as her lawyer, Arroyo saw the UN siding with her in resolving that her arrest and detention for five years were arbitrary, illegal, a violation of her basic human rights, and a violation of international law. And who might I ask presided over this grave injustice and perversion of the law, who was prime executor of political persecution during the previous regime? The very same Leila de Lima you have all but canonized in your piece! Oh what glowing recommendation for someone who is simply paying for her crimes. And speaking of TIME, well, it's about friggin' time. (Oh yes, like your magazine, she deserves to be lampooned this way.) #leiladelima (at Time Magazine)
