An Eastern Black Swallowtail laid several small yellow eggs, one at a time, on a rue plant while Zoe, Peggy, and I happened to be standing right next to it. What probably happened before that point was she visited a male’s territory, which is high up and away from food sources and which he defends from other males. After 4-9 days the eggs will hatch into fluorescent green, yellow, and black striped caterpillars, and perhaps they will overwinter in their chrysalis since it is so late in the year for more butterflies.
