some notes

lime obviously talks a lot about lemon too, because they are Besties AND Rivals, but i think she is more shy to talk about their romantic relationship. lemon, on the other hand, is going to tell everyone the story of their first kiss, and of their second third fourth fifth etc kisses

lemon is unhinged because she is so deeply in love, not because she’s a weirdo freak or anything. actually she is often judging her parents for the fact that they show their affection by calling each other names and teasing and stuff. this is not the lemon way. she’s unhinged in the way that she is going to rent out a billboard in castelia city’s square that reads LEMON OAK ❤️ LIME HAYDEN and then is confused when lime’s like. ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND (deep down she is very endeared but initially these gestures are pretty mortifying, lmao)

fell in love slowly is a bit misleading because in reality it’s that she was crushing for a long time but she didn’t want lemon to be her first relationship that inevitably goes up in flames as first relationships Obviously would, because she really values her friendship and rivalry with lemon and wouldn’t want to let that go. but she does also develop her crush later than lemon does. lemon has been crushing since day one when they were ten years old. lime’s crush comes more so when she’s ~13

i see drew as a bit of a clean freak and i think he would have passed that on to lime. lemon on the other hand is just…admittedly very adhd-coded, lmao. she’s not messy so much as disorganized

lemon is the big spoon more often because she is aggressively clingy and is always going in for the hug. also one of my longest standing gary headcanons is that he is a closet cuddler and it comes out when he’s asleep and i think lemon is probably the same way. the “there was only one bed” scenario with lemon and lime would definitely end with lime being like WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK while lemon clings to her like a baby koala despite fully being asleep lmao

lime hates being in love only in the sense that she is being a Realist about it. after they actually get together i think lime would be more open with it so that’s why she’s firmly in the middle

same thing with the works out long term/breaks up after a week one. they are obviously endgame but lime needed a lot more convincing to give it a shot lol

i was talking to friends about this a while ago but i think gary and goh’s daughter being Like That is just like. uniquely funny. two biggest try hards in the world raising a child who is a total fail swag loser and doesn’t even care (though obviously in her view of things she is just swag. not a fail loser at all. even when she is actively losing)

But. what DID she inherit from her dads?

well. ok. she is still a try hard at some things. in the sense she puts 150% into whatever interests her. and says fuck everything else who cares. which - maybe a hot take, idk - but this is a goh trait 100%. “i don’t want to get friends i want to get pokemon” mr six computer monitors at. age six. all for his Hyperfixation. gary’s not really like this. he puts 150% into everything because he is just that good. whether he enjoys the thing or not. he is going to win everything he does ever. and the really annoying thing is he really is good at 90% of things he does (the other 10%. well. i have some thoughts on things he probably sucks at but it really boils down to “whatever is funniest in the moment”)

otherwise. lemon’s arrogance? she got that from both her dads. and they never once considered trying to humble her. she’s like this because she was actually loved too much and told she was awesome and special even when she was not being awesome or special even a little bit. the only line is like. she had to be POLITE. and NICE. they would have both encouraged her to be nice to the weirdo loner kids at school - but for as charismatic as she might be, i do think she started out as the weirdo loner kid herself anyway (her sports arc is probably where she found her People) (also she’d mostly be fine with this i think? only child with a huge imagination…sometimes she might have actually preferred to play alone because other kids just couldn’t keep up with her. #HerMind. possibly also something she got from both her dads, though at the end of the day they are definitely both introverts and she is veryyy much an extrovert lol. her issue is just that she thinks she is better than everyone else but she’s been taught better than to say so to them (goh’s intervention…gary’s constant gassing her up would have gone to her heard big time if her dad wasn’t there to chase every “you are the smartest coolest girl in your class” with a “BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO TREAT EVERYONE LIKE EQUALS EVEN IF THEY ARE STUPID AND EMBARRASSING AND SEEM LIKE THEY DONT REALLY DESERVE IT” (yes. he would phrase it exactly like this. because he and gary find 99% of people stupid and embarrassing. this is why they’re soulmates and one day it will get them both punched))

she is also smart. because these are the kinds of parents who would have been reading textbooks to their kid every night at bedtime and drilling math problems for fun at the dinner table just so she would be able to enter kindergarten and prove she is better than everyone else because she has the square root of 404 496 memorized already. but it’s more of a “they set out to teach her math and that get so distracted trying to outdo each other at math that they forget to ask lemon to solve stuff too” so she’s just picking this stuff up like dinnertime entertainment rather than actively being drilled. which is probably in a roundabout way healthier for her lol. but yeah she comes by her intelligence naturally (side bar but [insert huge long essay about child psychology and intelligence theories and tacks on a big IQ IS A BOGUS METRIC MADE UP TO SYSTEMATIZE EUGENICS AND INTELLIGENCE IS NOT INHERENT OR GENETIC at the end]. just so everyone is clear where i stand on this topic. and i am actually saying that she is smart because she was encouraged to be curious and ask questions and literally grew up in a home attached to a science lab with plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning. NOT that she inherited “smart genes” from her dads or some bullshit like that), she is just very disinterested in school so she kind of just coasts. these nerds raised a jock, what can i say

attention-seeker. she comes by that naturally too. but i do think they like, made efforts to teach her to just be like. PAY ATTENTION TO ME BECAUSE I LOVE YOU AND WANT ATTENTION. rather than to Cause Problems to get attention. because they are both rather noted Problem Causers themselves. and they definitely fostered that neediness by prioritizing her in every way. she is the epitome of a spoiled only child, but importantly she is very spoiled Emotionally and has never once in her life been CALLED spoiled by at least one of her parents (i think gary might tease her about her dad spoiling her, but then she’d be like but daddy said i deserve everything in the world and he’d be like you know what your dad’s right. maybe we actually aren’t spoiling you enough. want some ice cream? LMAO), because this would be a super touchy subject for goh, right, i mean. back to the six computer monitors thing lol. he was objectively a spoiled kid. MATERIALLY. so he’d overcompensate by doing the opposite which is quality time x100. but he can’t say no to her so every time they go together she gets a new toy or treat. and gary can make fun all he likes but he does the exact same fucking thing. so.

also. i do think she has a mean streak that absolutely comes out primarily when she is jealous. because she is so used to being the special snowflake in the room she just doesn’t know how to deal with other people getting more attention than her. it’s why hayate is her number one opp. but - and maybe i’ve said this before here idk lol - i think gary and goh are the types to talk a LOT of shit privately. and so they’d really tell her like. you can say anything bad about anyone who is wrong and stupid. AS LONG AS it’s in private. and this is definitely the worst quality they gave her because it’s where her arrogance comes out the most lmao. i’d imagine the first time lime comes around for oak family dinner it would be a real “oh. THAT’S why she’s like that moment” because gary and goh would be trying to be normal at least a little but to them normal still includes a whole laundry list of everyone who Personally Wronged Them during the day. like ugh that barista this morning was so shit. you know she’s been doing this job for three years now - believe me, i asked - so she really shouldn’t be messing up my convoluted latter order. frankly they should be lowering her wages for sheer incompetence. this is because they’re kind of awful people but they both are mature enough at this point to not call strangers incompetent to their faces (well. goh probably wasn’t ever doing that. but he would have fantasized about it. which is probably just one more reason gary pissed him off so much. tbh). and like. lemon being mean and self-centred is, again, her worst trait by far. and it is particularly shocking because publicly she is such a sweet nice girl. the one thing she has over her parents is there she is only ever really talking shit about like. one (1) person, who she feels personally wronged or threatened by. gary and goh will shit talk everyone except for the special people in Their Circle. let’s just say they definitely did not make friends with other parents when lemon was in school LMAO

anyway i’m sure there are other things but this has been my mindless stream of consciousness rambling on my 1.5hr commute home from work to help distract me from the fact that it is like 40 fucking degrees outside. and i am home now. so i will stop. but thanks for tuning into Lemon Oak Thoughts

like ok. at the end of the day i think it's hayate, right? like.

hayate: fanboying over lime lemon: i hate this fucking freak. god. i'm going to kill this little loser asshole lime: ok well yeah he's a loser but like...he's my brother's best friend so. Stop. :/

and the thing is, like, after the nigelslater of it all starts to become an Issue, i think lemon would be really like. see? i told you so. hayate sucks. hayate's just the worst. and i think this would drive lime crazy because like. lemon is making this about herself when it is really about the fact that hayate is a total emotional leech on kipper. and like, the petty part is obviously all on lemon here, because she is so Smug about how she was right that hayate is just the worst. and it's all just founded in this like, fear she had when they first met that maybe lime would replace her with this annoying kid who is obsessed with her (to be fair, lemon was annoying and obsessed with lime first. God, hayate.). and like at the end of the day the divide her is obviously, well, lemon is an only child, and she has no frame of reference for how lime might feel about hayate given the relationship he has with her brother.

and like overall i don't see them arguing much in general, except like very surface level pokemon rival kind of goading each other "arguments," but they're both pretty chill in this respect - i think lemon has a very high tolerance for being ragebaited because she was raised by gary freaking oak, and ironically she is the total opposite of her parents in that she does not enjoy starting conflicts at all, and i think lime just has a hard time staying mad at lemon about much of anything because she's so boisterous and carefree and it makes her difficult to have arguments with (it's like talking to a brick wall, also. lmao) - so in general i think hayate is one of the only things they genuinely fight about and it's just like. objectively a ridiculous thing to argue about LMAO

🎂: how do they celebrate each other’s birthdays?

lemon's all about Big Gestures, so she's the type to like, get up early and make breakfast and serve breakfast in bed and also have a mile-long itinerary full of things lime loves doing. and the thing is like, these gestures are a little lost on lime, because lime's ideal birthday is staying home with her loved ones and chilling. which is initially how lime would try to celebrate lemon's birthday - and lemon would be SO devastated, thinking lime forgot about her birthday and didn't have time to plan anything and she's like, covering up by acting like the plan was always to just stay in and eat cake and video call with her dads or whatever. so i think after a few years they'd realize that they're giving the other the thing they each want and they'd flip it around (which is for the best, because as established, lemon sucks at cooking, so her breakfast in bed would be just horrible anyway)
