The seed-heads of Monarda citriodora (bergamot, lemon bee balm, lemon-mint) provide late season interest for this long flowering annual which blooms from May through to August. The pink whorled flower heads have been replaced with these pewter seed-heads and the aromatic, lemon citrus foliage is over. During the season the leaves make excellent herbal tea and the flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies. Monarda is easily grown from seed sown in late winter to spring in pots under glass or sown directly where they are to flower once all danger of frost is passed.
