generally speaking i'm extremely a stickler for character animal symbolism, i like to commit one animal to each character and stick with that usually, so for yamato, on account of him having what appears to be a cat mask, generally i like to keep his stuff cats all the way down

naruto as a series resists this kind of symbolism/theming implicitly tho. like sasuke for example, the uchiha have ties to cats, but he summons snakes because of his time with orochimaru, but after he leaves orochimaru for team taka, he leans heavy on the hawk symbols, while still having his contract with the snakes

naruto also, because of the nine tailed fox, one (me. im talking about me.) would generally want to keep his symbolism to foxes. however, because he is taught by master jiraiya, he adopts not an insignificant amount of toad symbols as well. fuck yeah toads.

against my personal inclinations, the way that animals are used in naruto is not a reflection of the character themselves but often who has influenced them.

generally i dont imagine yamato with summons at all! since he hasn't been trained by anyone other than danzō directly

that said,

otters are as good as any and on top of that, there are some very funny attributes abt otters. here.

notice him. notice his hands. ok good

another nice thing about otters is that. due to living in water where hypothetically they could be adrift at any time. otters sleep holding hands...or clinging on to each other. if u saw any of my recent sleepy yamato posting u can assume i find this idea really. endearing

top picture is of two adult otters holding hands 2 prevent themselves from drifting away, bottom picture is of an adult otter sleeping with their kid resting on them, bc the baby is too small to be able to hold hands properly

also kakashihasibs brings up a very good point about otters being both water and land creatures, fitting yamato's chakra natures, as well as having little arm pockets for storing things...perfectly prepared little creatures.

while i do not generally think of yamato as a character who is particularly silly or outright playful in the way of otters, it should be noted that summons do not need to be in constant alignment with their summoners (as gai is very speedy and very playful and reckless, not much like a tortoise is generally thought of being) and the fact that otters live in a constantly turbulent environment (wide and shifting waters) and take precautions to stay together and keep themselves safe (building seaweed beds for babies to cling to and holding onto each other when adults) is an admirable attribute, certainly
