JJ and Bella are finally getting married and as the two groomsmen, Leo's and Otabek's invitations say they can bring someone with them to the reception. The only problem is that they don't want to bring anyone else; they would like to be each other's plus one.

Or, Otabek wants to be honest with JJ, Leo wants to keep hiding their relationship. Arguments ensue.

“Not really,” says Otabek—which is a lie, so he corrects himself. “Sort of. The bike’s fine.”

“I wasn’t asking about the bike.”

Five near misses Otabek has on his bike, and one crash too close for comfort.

It begins in Toronto, in the winter after Otabek’s sixteenth birthday, when the snow is slick on the ground and the days are short and Otabek does not head straight home after his Saturday morning rink session.

There’s a DriveTest centre forty minutes away in the other direction, and he counts the stops as the bus rumbles along through the snow. He’s barely been able to focus that morning; his brain has been blanking in the worst possible way, and with every spin and twizzle and backwards crossover his mind hasn’t been on his form or his speed or shoulders away from your ears, Otabek, but on right of way rules and gear shifting. He has a well-thumbed copy of The Official MTO Motorcycle Handbook in hand, and tries to check through the pages he’s bookmarked, the ones with the questions he got wrong most often in the practice quizzes.

But his hands are shaking, and he can barely focus on the words, and Otabek stows the book away before he changes buses.

Before a competition, there’s a point where you can’t practice your jumps anymore, and you run out of time to go through the motions of an entire routine; where you have to trust in your body and mind and the things they have trained to do. As he stands outside the DriveTest centre in the north of North York and gathers his resolve to step inside, Otabek sends up a wish and a prayer on the wind that it works the same today.

Sixty-three days later, he gets on a motorcycle for the first time.

otabek's anger is icy—silent and cold, a thousand and one words shot through a single sweep of an eye. leo's rage is fiery—huffing and storming through, like a match set to dry wood, and it consumes. things are always worse when they can't escape each other, huddled in a tiny hotel room in the middle of geneva, switzerland, and there's only one bed.

"i'll sleep on the floor," leo says, "you can take the bed tonight."

otabek glances at the ratty carpeting and at the slightly-less-uncomfortable mattress and glares. "fuck that. we might be in a fight, but you're still my boyfriend. i'm not making you sleep on the floor."

leo takes the right side of the bed, otabek takes the left, and both are turned facing away from each other. they wake up in each other's arms, legs tangled and memories hazy.

the way that leo shows his love is obvious. whenever leo and otabek meet up after being away from eachother for so long, hes always hanging onto him. leaning against his back with his head on his shoulder, holding his hand whenever he wants to take otabek anywhere and otabek is always happy to have him close. leo loves talking abt his bf whenever he can when he’s w others. he talks about him with such admiration and pride and when otabek came 4th in grand prix (otabek, the scorpio he is, was frustrated and unsatisfied but he’d rather silently suffer than tell anyone this) leo gave him the warmest smile and bursted out about how he was so proud of him bc??? he went to the grand prix and that’s an amazing achievement! and he says all this with his whole heart that otabek is just so overwhelmed and so grateful to him bc he always knows how to cheer him up, sometimes without even trying!

otabeks way of loving is a little less obvious. it’s texting good morning and goodnight everyday when possible. it’s secret looks whenever leos looking the other way. it’s silently giving leo an ear and a shoulder to cry on whenever he’s feeling upset. it’s “i’m glad i’ve met you"s, and "thank you for being you. thank you for loving me"s at extremely unexpected times (and leo just laughs at the latter bc? who thanks people for loving them? and kisses him when he sees that otabek is embarrassed) otabeks way of showing his love is hard to catch at times but leo is happy to learn how otabek expresses himself and he enjoys these little things that he only knows abt otabek

Am I the only one that can imagine them being friends? Like, bonding over music? Leo would be a nerd because he's have a music friend and just spam Otabek with his favorite songs and Otabek giving small signs of liking them and then Otabek sends Leo a file of one of his mashups/dubstep remixes of the songs Leo sent and Leo looses his mind over it? Bonus: Yuri being jealous and asking why Leo texts Beka so much.

Otabek clears his throat. “Well … What about you, Leo? Do you have any ink?”

“Yeah, I have a few tattoos.” When Otabek doesn’t say anything, he decides it can’t hurt to be a little more specific. “I have a monarch butterfly on my shoulder, since uh, my hometown in Mexico is where they migrate to during winter. I also have a landscape of Pico de Tacíntaro. It’s uh, it’s a mountain, and it has a Mexican eagle flying over it. It’s on my back.”

“No shit?” Huh? Somehow, Otabek doesn’t strike him as the type of person to curse. And JJ’s silence seems to confirm Leo’s suspicion because even with a prolonged break of confusion, no one talks until Otabek tries again. “I have the mountains of Almaty on my back. My hometown. And … well, a Kazakh eagle.”

-- or: Otabek and Leo meet through Discord. They find out they have similar tattoos, which is obviously a very good reason to plan a wedding right on the spot. It's funny because it's a joke. Right?

Otabek takes a moment to turn down the heat on the element and the music on the radio before crossing the tiny kitchenette to the doorway, and he leans out ready to say hello. But the master bedroom door’s swinging half-closed even as he looks out, and he shakes his head soft to himself. He can give Leo half a minute to catch his breath from the stairs and put out his skates.

And then he sees the shoe rack right by the door, missing one pair of trainers, and narrows his eyes.

He has to get back to the stove, to make sure nothing sticks or burns, but once he’s there, pushing the food around the pan once more, Otabek takes up his phone.

Barely thirty seconds later, a photo pings back: Leo’s trainers hooked over his fingers and his socked feet wiggling in the air.
