We laid out the cards; proud of flush hearts... all the while forgetting that the odds were never in our favor. Clubs were waiting to stick it to us and Spades had already dug the traps.  We were losing to diamonds before we even saw the Jokers laughing in our face, "Love is for Fools..."

He looked across the dance floor and met my stare. I knew he wasn’t looking for me. And although the music seemed to suddenly swell the room at that exact second, I knew there was nothing magical about our momentary exchange of eye contact.
