To answer your question dear, you first need to know your scanner. Here are some things to consider:

- Changing the setting of the dpi to a high dpi for your scan allows you to downsize your image as well as making it appear sharper. I normally set mine at 500 dpi

- Saving the scans as TIFF images after you scan will keep the original quality of the image and not compress it further (do not save as jpeg as the pixels in the scans lose it's quality quite greatly)

- If you have settings such as 'sharpening filter' (sharpens images further) and 'descreening filter' (this gets rid of lines running through scans) make sure that they are selected as this will aid in producing quality scans.
