Leo McCarey - An Affair to Remember (1957) A lovely film, a weepy to beat all weepies that starts out as a romantic comedy and ends as a heart-wrenching drama. Much of the merit goes not only to Leo McCarey but to Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr as star-crossed lover who meet on a trans-atlantic ship. Grant and Kerr have real chemistry here both during their courting scenes on the ship, with fast paced fun dialogue and in the final scene when other emotions come into play. One might call the film cheaply manipulative towards the end, and it might be that, but sometimes that kind of stuff just works and when the talent on screen is so great it's a pleasure to be so deftly manipulated. If I have one problem with the film it's that Grant's character is supposed to be some kind of great painter, but his painting seem a bit crap. This is always a problem when film are portraying some other art-form that's supposed to be great, it's nearly always a let down and this film is no exception. But that isn't really why you should watch this, it's all about Grant and Kerr, some pretty beautiful color cinematography and a weepy romantic dramedy, if you are into those things then this is a great film for you.
