You don’t actually understand the friendship between Leon and Merlin is actually so important to me.

That’s Leon’s best friend-in-law. Leon sees Merlin and at first he’s like, “okay, he seems like he’s bad at the job, but he did save Arthur’s life” and season after season it starts to shift until Leon is in full, “If Merlin dies Arthur will never recover” type thinking. He protects him, laughs with him, makes fun of him, assists without being asked, becomes a better knight, and would probably genuinely break the law for him.

The whole point of Merlin is that he isn’t ever seen for what he is truly worth, but I really believe that’s just in his head. His friends love him so so deeply and have always seen him as someone worth not only protecting but following. And they believe that well before knowing of his power.
