Chicago Tenor Saxophone Rarities
The decline in big bands and the advent of Bebop had drastically changed the jazz landscape. But with the popularity of Louis Jordan, Illinois Jacquet and a plethora of other instrumentalists there were a number of Rhythm and Blues groups stacking the jukeboxes via independent record labels. A recent Crownpropeller blog on Chicago tenor players displays some rare 78 RPM entries including Gene Ammons, the greatly overlooked John “Schoolboy” Porter (who later recorded on guitar for Roosevelt Sykes) and Leon Washington who was a veteran of the Earl Hines band.
