Revised Statement
Conveying an emotion through a piece of art can be both challenging and simple. The idea of this project is to project myself through an abstract feeling. In this work I am making a monster head. The head represents a feeling I get often, and that is the feeling of sticking out of a crowd. That feeling that all eyes are on you and that you are the center of an attention that you do not want to be a part of. I am nervous by nature and self conscious. I am working on both of these faults of mine by trying to express and expose this feeling to the viewers of my work. I am going to put this head on someone and taking pictures of them wearing the head around the city and in normal settings as in the library or a classroom. Making the head large and very eye catching is part of the design to make people look at it. I want people to be staring while I take the photos and I want people to make comments about the person in the head. I want to make the head out of felt and foam to try and make it look like a muppet doll. I want it to look that way to give it a more child like look to put my viewer even more on edge and to make sure they are paying close attention to this monster in the middle of a city. This is the first time i’m using these materials so it is an exploration not only of myself but of an artistic nature as well. I want my viewers to see what it’s like to have this feeling. I want someone who has this feeling as well to identify with it and understand that there are others going through it as well. I know I can make that happen with my Monster head as well.
Leon Simone: Artist Statement
For my self portrait I am making a monster head. I am going to put this head on someone and taking pictures of them wearing the head around the city and in normal settings as in the library or a classroom. The head represents a feeling I get often, and that is a feeling as if I am sticking out of a crowd. That feeling that all eyes are on you and you are the center of an attention that you do not want to be a part of. Making the head large and very eye catching is part of the design to make people look at it. I want people to be staring while I take the photos and I want people to make comments about the person in the head. The idea of this project is to project myself through an abstract feeling. The person with the monster head on represents me because it is a feeling I get almost every day. I am nervous by nature and self conscious. I am working on both of these faults of mine by trying to express and expose this feeling to the viewers of my work. The main goal for myself as an artists is to try to make someone feel something when they view my work. I know I can make that happen with my Monster head as well.
The Other- Leon Simone
The Other to me are those who live their life passively and without opinion and those who shut themselves away inside and refuse to live in a changing world.
