Focusing on past heartbreak became too easy thanks to Taylor Swift. And perhaps she should have expected this. Maybe she should have known that she was going to spend the next few days picking apart all of her romantic endeavors. And, somehow, there were a lot. Most short-lived but still impactful, mostly because Maya had the kind of emotions that were certainly all-consuming. It was both a curse and a blessing.
“Have you ever cried at a party?” Maya asks, shifting through records settled into a plastic crate. “I cried at my twenty-sixth birthday party. Which was, what, ten years ago? God, I’m ancient...” Maya laughs out, switching to another aisle. It was only the two of them in there along with a cashier who had ventured into the back. “I had only been in the city for a year by then. And I had like, one friend, and they decided to throw me a party which was really sweet. They invited all their friends who I didn’t know. I cried like a baby at one point in the night ‘cause I felt so out of place. Lonely too, I guess.” She chuckles, a bittersweet sound, “I wish I knew you then.”
