Currently in Crete and I came across this in Lerapetra.
I ended up looking online for any info and came across a local legend that states that Napoleon came to Lerapetra in search of drinking water and ended up spending a night with a local that could speak French. Also, that this all occurred in 1798, which around the start of the Egyptian campaign.
Also in the legend, Napoleon wrote a note to the owners of the house at the time, but this note got sold to a French captain later on. The location of said note is unknown. There is also mention of of a telescope, but the last location I could find was when it was gifted to the to the revolutionary committee in Archanes in 1897.
Does anyone have information that could confirm this? Or is it just a legend?
(Sorry for the word vomit there. There really isn’t much info, so I thought sharing all I could find might be helpful.)
