Hi! I'm Hopster, and welcome to my blog! this is just where i post most of my chaos, which just so happens to be Napoleonic stuff and Danish Golden age right now.

These past few days I have been flooded with asks asking about monetary help for medication, war aid, etc. I have gotten three today alone, and it’s not even 2pm for me.

I want my ask box open for folks, but it’s tempting to close it because of this. I don’t want modern politics on my blog, nor do I have the money to help. So please stop.

That being said, if your ask has anything regarding the asking of money or modern politics (2000-present) it will automatically be deleted and you will be blocked.

And just in case someone wants to start calling me things I’m not, I just want to keep modern politics off my blog. I am surrounded by that shit every day, especially with my situation. This is my safe space where I talk about silly and historical stuff.

"Eternity" – Celebrating Doctor Larrey's 260th Birthday

The drawing was made last year but never posted. This year I made some minor adjustments and attached the merchandise made from last year’s illustration—hand sanitizer and a lenticular card video—to post it in celebration of Doctor (Larrey)'s 260th birthday. The idea behind the hand sanitizer is that the Grand Army’s military surgeon guards your health. The text in the background of the illustration is Rimbaud's Eternal:

“Mon âme éternelle, Observe ton vœu Malgré la nuit seule Et le jour en feu.”

So the illustration is divided into a day version and a night version. The flowers surrounding Larrey are calendulas—also called "medal flowers." In Greek mythology, calendula is considered a gift from the sun god Apollo, but its flower language means "farewell" and also "integrity"—which is exactly how Napoleon once praised Larrey, as the most upright person. Above Larrey's head is laurel, and around him are oaks and oak leaves. The oak symbolizes resilience and has long been used in the decoration of marshals' uniforms; after Larrey's passing, laurel leaves were laid in his coffin... In short, this illustration is packed with many small symbolic touches, reflecting the deep affection between the two and their fate. The day version of the hand sanitizer is scented "Love Magic"—my own private indulgence, as I have always quietly shipped the pair (Emperor and Doctor). This year, at offline events, I gave away the remaining hand sanitizers to teachers who purchased the fanbooks. I hope everyone likes them.

Birth of Dominique Jean Larrey: The Father of Modern Military Surgery

On July 8, 1766, Dominique Jean Larrey was born in Beaudéan, France. A pioneering surgeon who served during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, Larrey transformed battlefield medicine with his innovative ideas, including the creation of the “flying ambulance” — rapid-response medical units that brought surgeons closer to the front lines to treat wounded soldiers quickly.

Serving with Napoleon Bonaparte’s armies, Larrey gained respect for his skill, courage, and compassion, treating soldiers regardless of their rank or nationality. His reforms helped establish many principles of modern military medicine, making him one of history’s most influential surgeons.

Dominique Jean Larrey, 1804

He was a French surgeon and military doctor during the Napoleonic Wars. He accompanied Napoleon on almost all of his campaigns. Napoleon called him “the most virtuous man I have ever known.”

Among his many innovations include introducing field hospitals, ambulance services, and first-aid practices to the battlefield. He was also the first to note the contagiousness of trachoma (1802) and published the first description of trench foot (1812).

Napoleon would say this of Larrey: “If the Army were to erect a monument of the memory of any one man, it should be that of Larrey. All the wounded are his family.”

After the battle Bonaparte inspected the field dressing station and was surprised to find that rum was being given to the wounded, as he believed all spirits had been lost. Larrey explained that all the rum was given by Bessières from his personal store.

He's a doctor with eight years of work experience at age 21.

Incident in the desert

On December 28, escorted by a detachment of cavalry, Bonaparte decides to visit the “sources of Moses”, located about twenty kilometers across the Red Sea, where a delegation from the Mount Sinai monastery awaits him, wishing to register his name on their guestbook [..]

Larrey and the officers accompany him on horseback and easily cross the ford at low tide to join the scientists who preferred to use a felucca. During the day, the small troop visits this legendary place from which flows through several openings a brackish water which allows a scant vegetation of bushes and palm trees attracting gazelles and ostriches.

A first incident occurs for Larrey. His Arabian horse turns out to be skittish over time, ends up bolting, carries his rider far away. Quickly unseated, Larrey falls, receives a blow of the hoof above the left eyebrow and passes out. When he comes to his senses, he finds himself alone in the desert at nightfall. He can only dress the wound with his handkerchief and try to find the camp on foot. There, the return of the horse without its rider raised the alarm. Very worried for his surgeon, Bonaparte sent Arab guides in search of him; they bring him back exhausted, supported on both sides.

Moved by his friend’s condition, Bonaparte made sure he was stretched out on his own cot in his tent and, despite nightfall, postponed the time of departure until he has recovered his strength. And he insists that Larrey does not go back on horseback but return to Suez by the felucca; he accompanies him there, holding him by the arm and entrusts him to Monge and Berthollet with the most extreme recommendations. This great mark of concern, which deeply touches Larrey, attaches him even more to the general and will be a milestone between the two men.

Love at first sight

Elisabeth-Charlotte would have been less pretty perhaps [than her sister], but her charm made of grace and subtlety, her artistic temperament, subjugated the young Dominique. Born in 1770, she shines with the freshness of her Twenty-two years old. Not only trained in chamber music and singing, she is already known in painting studios for her undeniable talent as a portrait painter. A pupil of the famous David, she almost got engaged to Gérard, also a portrait painter. Still in David’s studio, she is also influenced by Gros and his contemporary Girodet.

Girodet will be a very close friend of the future Larrey couple. There are few letters from Elisabeth or Dominic where he is not mentioned, his works studied, his notoriety sometimes sought. One year younger than Larrey, Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson was Prix de Rome in 1789 and lived the following five years in Italy. A man of his time, a supporter of the Revolution, he gradually broke with David’s academicism to appear as one of the first orientalists and romantics. Everyone will be talking about the Funeral of Atala or The Cairo Revolt. Close to Chateaubriand whose portrait he painted, to Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, he is a friend of the poet Delille, the “enchanter” of the XVIII th century who dazzled Frederick II of Prussia. Like Delille, Girodet also practices translating Latin poems.

Larrey, a tough mountain dweller, poor, sociable without being worldly, knowing only his art but endowed with a great open-mindedness, will therefore integrate into a very affluent, educated, and artistic, Parisian environment. The mutual love of Elisabeth and Dominique was immediate. Love at first sight is coupled, for him, with a deep admiration, a respectful devotion and even a certain gratefulness.

His letters are love songs. “(..) if you remember our first loves, at that time I was only happy when I was near you and yet I could hardly articulate a few words: I thought, and I could not convey my thought. (…) But you will keep them, those so tender, so expressive eyes, which have passed me so many times your thought and your love, which knew by turns to revive and my courage in the difficult circumstances and my friendship when for frivolous or childish reasons, I let it weaken. Keep them well, those beautiful eyes … ” When among other objects he loses the portrait of Elisabeth, his despair is extreme …

STORY TIME

So the reason why the rumor started in the first place was because Larrey’s carriage (which was pretty well known in the army) arrived at Aranda sans Larrey one day. So people automatically assumed he had died which caused the rumor to spread like wildfire throughout the army, but it was quickly proven false when Larrey arrived to Aranda very much alive.

What had actually happened was he came across a starving young mother and child on the side of the road. Larrey not only stopped to help them, but decided to let them ride to town in his carriage while he followed behind on foot.
