Today we celebrate the Venerable Vincent of Lerins. Saint Vincent was born in Gaul (modern day France) and was the brother of Saint Lupus, Bishop of Troyes. He was drafted as a soldier, but then left the world to become a monk in one of the most renowned monasteries of Lerins where he was ordained a priest. Saint Vincent is well known for his work, Commonitorium, which was a writing that explicitly distinguished the Orthodox teaching from the heretical teachings. His most memorable quote is that the Orthodox faith has been believed “everywhere, always, and by all.” He was also a key figure in defending the position of the name of the Virgin Mary as Theotokos, opposing the heresy of Nestorius which was condemned in the Third Ecumenical Council. Having lived a life valiantly defending Orthodox doctrine, Saint Vincent reposed in peace in about the year 445 AD.
