Les Ripoux (1984)
Philippe Noiret (one of my all-time favourite actors - French or otherwise) starred in Claude Zidi's ground-breaking French comedy-thriller "Les Ripoux" as René Boirond. a bent copper teaching his new partner (Thierry Lhermitte) to be as crooked as he is.
Noiret plays a little against his usual type, here. A loveable rogue, with a greedy streak and a way of using his status as a copper to get one over on almost everyone he meets.
Personally, I think it's a masterpiece of its type, and not just because Noiret gets me so aroused. It's one of my favourite films.
Love the moustache BTW. The film spawned a couple of sequels: "Ripoux Contre Ripoux" (1990), which is quite good, and "Les Ripoux 3" (2003), which is abysmal.
The original, however, is the best by far and Noiret is the best in a cast of excellent actors.
"Ripoux", if you are not au fait with French, is Parisian back-slang. It's a corruption of "pourri", meaning rotten, and applies to corrupt policemen, or bent coppers as we Londoners like to term them. Bless 'em one and all.
