Perennially frustrated that it’s so common in fanfic to depict Satine’s rise to power be down to republic backing, and less generously to her appeasing and collaborating with them. To be fair to this take she was protected by a jedi (though imo the extent to which the jedi represent the republic at all times is... debatable, and we have few details in this case) And it’s not exactly surprising that the Evil Queen Satine crowd aren’t going to acknowledge she had popular consensus despite that being explicit in the cartoon (how many of them have watched it anyway)
But still, it frustrates me. Because Satine’s whole first arc is about her safeguarding Mandalore’s independence in the face of Republic overreach! That’s... her introductory story. She’s downright hostile to Obi Wan until he clarifies that he’s there as a jedi, not on behalf of the republic army. Palpatine is trying to use accusations of deathwatch activity and deathwatch collusion with the separatists as grounds to get his foot the door and she is very attuned to that and puts herself directly in harms way to prevent it. She has whole on screen speeches about it. You can’t miss it!
And I guess it’s not impossible that she made all kinds of concessions and enjoyed republic backing when she was younger, and that she changed. It’s not like we know. Nevertheless, her protectiveness of Mandalorian (and the rest of the neutral coalition) independence is one of her defining traits in the show! And the show does offer an explanation for her gaining power- it could just be the same way she lost it. There was an election. *
It gets even more ironic when you consider that her primary detractors- deathwatch- would eventually be the ones to appeal for republic military aid and bring republic troops into Sundari, paving the way for the empire to glass them.
*don’t ask me how mandalorian elections work, we just know they had them and that she acknowledged the lost public support through them at the end there
