IT Tablet Contest Winner! Victoria Leggett - Lesley University Expressive Therapy (Class of 2015)
Congratulations to Victoria Leggett a Junior in the Expressive Arts Therapy Program (class of 2015) at Lesley University! Victoria won an HP Slate 7 from the Lesley University IT Office.
This is Victoria's first tablet, and we're excited to introduce her to mobile computing. When asked what she plans to use the tablet for, she stated "Everything!". I'm sure this includes using her favorite social media platform, Tumblr. While at Lesley Victoria has found the most useful piece of Technology to be the computers in our labs and print services. The HP Slate includes a webcam, so Victoria will be video chatting with friends and family in no-time over Skype.
Congratulations again Victoria, we hope you enjoy your new tablet!
Although our contest is now over, you can still follow IT on Twitter and Facebook to keep up with news and other contest opportunities.
Should I Buy Chromebook for College?
Last week I had a great time speaking with the parents of the Lesley University class of 2017. During an information session and over lunch, I answered numerous questions about technology. One questions I received from a mother Lesley students was about whether or not their daughter could bring a Chromebook to college and be successful. Chromebooks are slimmed down version of the PC that does not run on Microsoft Windows nor does it run Apple's OS X, so naturally I could understand her hesitation. The Chrome operating system is essentially a browser. There are numerous add-ons that will allow you to accomplish many tasks, but due to it's cloud based nature you have to be connected to the internet to get to gain access to these resources. While Apple iPads and even the latest version of Windows now require connectivity to the internet to download new apps, this is different from a traditional computer where you can go to a store, pick up an installation disk, and install your software.
Starting at $199, Chromebooks are a great way to access the internet, e-mail, and even video chat through Google Hangouts. Traditional applications like Microsoft Office are not available to install on a Chromebook, but you can use a service like Google Docs. You can even export these documents to a compatible Microsoft Office format to e-mail to a professor or upload to MyLesley.
If your program does not have any specific requirements, a Chromebook is an affordable alternative to buying a PC. At Lesley we have 9 computer labs on the Cambridge campus, the library has 21 public computers, and the Boston Campus also has a fleet of desktops. With over 400 computers public available on campus, if there is something your Chromebook can't do, we've got you covered. With wireless access available on every corner of campus, you will always have connectivity for your Chromebook.
Still on the fence? Check out this article "Two Weeks With A Chromebook" to read about a user's experience with a Chromebook. http://www.omgchrome.com/two-weeks-with-a-chromebook/

myLesley Course Lifecycle Policy
Dear Lesley Faculty and Staff, We are writing to share some important changes. Lesley University is implementing a course lifecycle policy to better serve the needs of the Lesley Community. In order to improve the user experience for faculty and students, adhere to Copyright laws without adding an administrative burden to our faculty, and keep our system functioning optimally, all courses with an ending date of more than two years will be removed from myLesley, effective Monday, May 27, 2013. Since the inception of myLesley in 2003, courses that have ended have not been removed from the system while new courses continue to be added. This leads to an unmanageable list of courses for faculty, and at times students, in their “my Courses” tab. Institutionally, the performance of myLesley is affected by the size of our database, which is made up of all of the data in myLesley, including courses and their content. The size of the database also contributes to the amount of time that system upgrades take. This process had been discussed and vetted by many stakeholders (Faculty Assembly, University Council, President's Cabinet, Technology Council) and we are finally at the point of execution. It is most common for schools to remove courses from the system at the end of eachsemester but Lesley is going to accommodate 2 years of courses. Effective Monday, May 27, 2013, the myLesley daily update will no longer include courses that are more than 2 years (730 days) old. This means that courses will be evaluated daily and if they ended more than 2 years ago they will no longer be included in myLesley. For more information about myLesley please visit the Lesley Intranet page:https://intranet.lesley.edu/it/enterprise/mylesley/ For the short-term, if you have a course that ended more than 2 years ago with content you would like to reuse in a future course and/or content you would like to preserve, we encourage you to follow the directions listed below to create an archive file of the course content and/or to collect discussion forum threads. For the long-term, we recommend that you get in the practice of archiving your course and/or collecting discussions at the end of each course to ensure you have the materials you need. Exporting courses (After exporting, the package should be saved on your computer) Collecting discussions For training or questions not answered in the links above, please contact eLIS at [email protected] or visit at http://www.lesleyelis.com/faculty/professional-development/. We aim to continuously enhance our services and are very excited to have this opportunity to better the myLesley experience here at Lesley University. Students will receive a separate communication about this policy later this week. We appreciate your patience as we implement this process.
