October 29, 2021 - Lesser Shortwing (Brachypteryx leucophris)
Found in forests in parts of South and Southeast Asia, these Old World flycatchers generally live near moving water. They mostly eat insects, including beetle grubs, as well as other invertebrates, such as snails and slugs. They build compact domed nests with side entrances from bamboo, roots, moss, and leaves hidden in vegetation on or near the ground. Females lay clutches of two to four eggs. Their population is likely declining due to habitat destruction and introduced predators.
