After school David and Joe and their friends decided to cut through the park on the way home. It was chilly out and had recently snowed, so they were all bundled up in their winter clothes. Beverly had recently started going out with Ray, just as David had suggested she do. But now that she had actually listened to him, Dave wasn’t so happy about it. Every time she laughed he caught himself looking in their direction, for some odd reason feeling angry with Ray.
Of course JoAnna noticed his attention was on the other couple and not her.
“Davy, didn’t you hear what I said?” she whimpered, tugging on his arm.
“What’s that, doll?” Dave snapped out of it, remembering JoAnna was at his side.
“Why aren’t you listening to me?” she pouted.
“Of course I’m listening,” he scoffed.
“No you aren’t, you keep on looking at Bev and Ray and you don’t hear a word I say!” JoAnna cried out, upset.
“Hey, I listen to you, you’re my girl, ain’t you?” Dave said affectionately, giving her a tender look.
It was enough to put her at ease.
But when Beverly let out another laugh as Ray took a puff from her cigarette, David’s eyes returned to her. He couldn’t describe how he felt, but he knew Beverly and Ray shouldn’t be together.
Walking a few paces behind the others were Joe and Lester, who just laughed at the drama going on before them.
“Les, why don’t you have a girlfriend?” Joe wondered out loud.
Lester was a good looking guy, there were probably a dozen girls at school who had a crush on him.
“Eh, I don’t really like any of the girls I know, do you?” Lester sighed.
“No,” Joe squeaked, “I guess not”
“Well at least you got me, pal,” Lester grinned.
He could feel his cheeks getting warmer, and his hands growing sweaty. But he couldn’t understand why.
