WHO READS UNORDINARY? im on team john til the end IDGAF how evil this man gets im on his side for lifeeeeeeee. the author did him wrong by giving him the right mindset and the right idea about EVERYTHING in their shitty oppressive society but then she made him all evil and unreasonable for another tired "change is good but dont go too far 😊👍❤️ change the system thru peaceful means mwah". why the FUCK would i enjoy reading about the catalyst for change turned into a villain for contrived reasons so the people who upheld the oppressive system can be shown in a heroic light when they try to stop him?
what was the reason why the author made him so crazy and unreasonable? WHY? he was right since the beginning, but now that the oppressors are starting to realize hes right, he has to be the bad guy now? the author is young teenage girl (her avatar is, at least? her age is unconfirmed) so the reason was probably more for drama and plot purposes than propaganda, but this narrative decision is still incredibly fucking harmful.
johns character was of the lowest class of human in their society since he was originally powerless. making him get drunk on power and become ultra violent not just once, but TWICE, is such a shitty message to send. whether or not the author did this on purpose, this implicates that bringing up the oppressed class to the level of oppressors is dangerous because they will abuse their newfound power. i mean... HELLO? Of all the messages to send, it had to be that?
plus, when john was brutalizing the royals as the joker, was i.... supposed to feel sorry? they got a one time taste of what the rest of the student body suffered every fucking day because they were complacent in a system that benefited them. they didnt do more to protect the lower tier students. So tell me why exactly these scenes were portrayed as a horrific act? why the fuck were they so mad when their precious friends, their fellow high tier students, got their asses kicked in school for the first time? its everyday life for the lower tiers. if they really did change and disagree with the system now, they shouldn't have such hostility towards john for doing what he did to them.
and when lower tier students were putting on the joker mask and attacking the higher tiers who beat them up, the story shouldve done more to avoid putting them on the same level. the way it was written, the story was putting the blame on them for "making the situation worse." the situation was already the worst since the beginning, people only started caring when their safety were threatened too. It literally did not "get worse" it was still fucking the same as it always was.
john has been on both sides. hes been on top of the world and at the very bottom of it. hes in the unique position of viewing both perspectives so he shouldve had more insight than the rest of the cast instead of this angsty bullshit this boring, dragged out arc is relying on. when there is a revolution, the oppressed class always, ALWAYS has to be the leader of it. although John is a high tier now, he was born powerless (less than dirt to them!) and chose to live powerless up until recently, so given the current cast, he shouldve been the only option to lead aside from seraphina who was only powerless until recently. I dont even like her that much because when she realized how oppressive their system is, she did resign from her position but still didnt do more to protect the lower tier students so what was the point lmao. The fuck are the lower tier students gonna do with her resignation? it benefits only her because she gets to wash her hands of her guilt.
the world building was written very poorly anyway. if this was how their society had always been, the oppressed people wouldve come up with ways to adapt to their society instead of just getting beaten up everyday lmao. Oppressed people arent mindless sheep waiting for the oppressors to save then lmao. you seriously telling me that only john then seraphina taught themselves self defense fighting and not one of the lower tiers had the same idea?
tldr johns character deserved better and i really think people who havent experienced oppression should quit fucking writing about oppression. write about other stuff for the love of god. idk the author and her life but her take on oppression is so shallow that i find it hard to believe she knows enough about it to write about it. discrimination ≠ oppression btw. idk whats going on because i dropped it when the story was dragging the john is bad arc to new heights of insensitive and boring but theres nothing that could redeem the harmful messages the story already put out no matter how much effort and length was put into the inevitable john redemption arc
