Born on this day: the doomed, ethereal and heroin-ravaged jazz trumpeter and crooner Chet Baker (23 December 1929 – 13 May 1988). For anyone curious about Baker’s life story, Bruce Weber’s 1988 documentary Let’s Get Lost and James Gavin’s haunting 2002 biography Deep in A Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker are both compulsory. For what it’s worth, my favourite Baker album will always be Baker’s Holiday (1965), in which he reinterprets the Billie Holiday songbook.
