Gallery cruising in Yorkville
Best rainy afternoon ever
Spent today gallery cruising in Toronto's Yorkville shopping district. The shopping is high-end and so are the galleries. I visited, in order: Gallery Gevik at 12 Hazelton (www.gevik.com) which had beautiful moody landscapes by Rita Letendre, the bright and sunny Loch Gallery at 16 Hazelton (www.lochgallery.com) showing brilliantly coloured abstracts by Michael Forster and almost-abstract landscapes by Shannon Morphew, the long established Mira Godard Gallery (www.godardgallery.com)which will be programming David Milne in a couple of weeks, and the Ingram Gallery (www.ingramgallery.com), which has an exhibition space downstairs but has a treasure trove of gems up their almost circular staircase. A fun way to spend an otherwise dreary day. Paintings above by Michael Forster at Loch Gallery and Colin Fraser at Mira Godard Gallery

"Victory, 1961 acrylic on canvas by Rita Letendre (b. 1928) at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Written near the painting: Quebec abstract painter Paul-Émile Borduas (1905-1960) had an immense impact on Letendre as a young artist. As Letendre recounts, "What a fine teacher [Borduas] was—probably the greatest influence on my life as a painter. Talented people, he used to say, are a dime a dozen, and technique—any bloody monkey, can master that. But what you do with it, now that's another story. As an artist, you must learn who you are, what life means to you. And only then can you relate your findings to the rest of the universe." #ago #artgalleryofontario #letendre #ritaletendre #victory #acrylicpainting #acryliconcanvas #dailyritual #ritaletendreweek (at AGO - Art Gallery of Ontario)
"Midnight Light" 1970 acrylic on canvas by Rita Letendre (b. 1928) at @agotoronto the Art Gallery of Ontario. Written near the painting: "For me, the medium determines the type of picture I'm producing. You cannot do with oils what succeeds with acrylics, nor succeed in obtaining the optical effects produced by the airbrush with pastels. A change in technique inevitably means a change in the picture." #ritaletendre #letendre #ago #artgalleryofontario #midnightlight #dailyritual #ritaletendreweek (at AGO - Art Gallery of Ontario)
"The Wild Wind" 1992 acrylic on canvas by Rita Letendre (b. 1928) at @agotoronto the Art Gallery of Ontario. Written near the installation: Rita Letendre is one of Canada's greatest living artists. Born in Drummondville, Quebec to Abenaki and Quebecois parents, Letendre began painting in Montreal in the 1940s. Renowned for her bold and visceral style, Letendre has pushed the boundaries of color, light, and space to new heights. In a career that spans over sixty-five years, Rita Letendre has used a brush, airbrush, palette knife and her hands to express the spirit of life. Vibrating with physical and emotional energy, her works embody her ongoing quest for connection and understanding. She makes fiery pain and passion visible and deploys light like a beacon of hope to explore human emotion and existence. #artgalleryofontario #ago #ritaletendre #letendre #acrylicpainting #acryliconcanvas #thewildwind #dailyritual #ritaletendreweek (at AGO - Art Gallery of Ontario)
