As I was looking over my pictures from our trip to Florida, a picture with an alligator came up, and it made me think about the expression “crocodile tears.” This expression comes from big lizards that are known for shedding tears right before they attack their prey. As I was thinking about it, I realized that we are just like these lizards. We all ‘shed tears’ and we all ‘cry’ before we attack. Maybe not literally a physical attack, but for one to “attack”, to raise his/her voice, get mad, upset, hurt someone’s feelings, criticize, humiliate, use negative talk towards or about others…for one to hurt anyone or anything else, he/she must “cry” first. One must have negative feelings in themselves before letting these feelings out on others; a happy and excited person will not attack others. We are currently approaching ‘Yom Kippur’, the Jewish holiday that is all about self-evaluation (which has a lot to do with forgiveness). Every year I focus on asking for forgiveness, but this year I have decided to focus on forgiving, just as I am welcoming this important day with a pure forgiveness to everyone and everything around me. There is no brighter light than of a person with a light heart. I read once that holding a grudge is like eating poison and expecting someone else to die… It makes no sense – holding this grudge hurts the holder of the grudge more than anyone else. So this year I will be focusing on my crocodile tears to prevent the “attack.” This year I am not only asking for forgiveness, but I am also forgiving. 🙂 One of my favorite mantras is “Let go or get dragged.” May we all have the awareness, strength, and wisdom to LET GO. I wish all of us a year full of love.
