Oliva sayana, the Lettered olive New Smyrna Beach in Volusia county, Florida; 10 June 2015 New Smyrna Beach BioBlitz 2015
No week-long romp about the coastal shallows of New Smyrna Beach would be complete without at least a few dozen Lettered olives. Oliva sayana can be quite abundant along this stretch of Volusia county’s coastline. You can find them rather easily during mid-to-low tide, though they’re easy to miss if you’re not looking for them. The diminutive gastropods are quick to disappear in the soft, wet sand.
I remember being distracted by organisms like this when I was a kid. I’d head to the beach with my family and friends to romp about and play in the water, but I’d sometimes end up sitting on the sand, looking and digging for mollusks. I’m sure you can imagine my delight when my daughter spotted a Lettered olive working its way through the sand at New Smyrna. “Look, dad!” she shouted. “A snail!”
Little snail, big world. Little kid, an even bigger world.

A new and wonderful paper source I have found that has absolutely gorgeous wedding invitations, save the dates, and other things as well. They have a blog that they post pretty frequently at and you should check that out as well.
Enjoy and Happy Planning.
