St Ledger stakes Firbeck Letwell original racecourse venue.

The first St Ledger was run between Firbeck and Letwell.    Major General Anthony St Leger was an army officer and politician who lived at Park Hill Estate in Firbeck and provided the prize money.  The St Ledger stakes later moved to Doncaster racecourse.

South Farm Letwell Barker Hades Rd

South Farm at Letwell has been turned into housing, but you get an idea of how the farm used to be.  On the other side of the road, you will see North Farm which is still a working farm.  We have lost so many farms in the area since I was born, I think most of the loss has been down to the unfair regulation of the EU.

Letwell Dove Cote

You will find the Letwell Dove Cote by North farm, but according to Rotherham borough council it is South Farm, can anybody clarify?  These were used for breeding doves to eat and also as a status symbol.

Dinnington to Letwell and Firbeck walk

At the moment we aren’t allowed to go out in the car for what they consider to be non-essential travel, otherwise, I would have gone to Derbyshire.  I think the police are abusing their powers, we never seem them normally protecting our community.  It was my birthday yesterday and this was my exercise for the day.  This is a sample of pictures along the way.

St Peter's Church, Letwell

St Peter’s Church, Letwell

It’s quite a nice walk from Dinnington to St Peter’s Church Letwell.  Go down Leys Lane from the top of Lorden’s Hill.   Look for the footpath to the right.  Then follow the footpath into Letwell and you will find the church.  If anybody from the church sees this, you are welcome to a copy of the original pictures.
