CROSSFIT LEVEL 1 CERT
So I sat mine the other weekend at Crossfit 09 in central Auckland.
Have to admit, before taking part, I was pretty skeptical. US$1000 for a weekend of lectures? What could you learn in two days? And for that amount, surely they'd provide food too? (They didn't. Lol)
I was wrong though. It was actually pretty effing awesome.
I've been crossfitting for a while now, and for someone who embraces the sport - it was awesome to network with people from all around New Zealand who share the passion.
The course tutors were Danny Mellor, Stacey Harris and Ed Morrison from Australia, and our very own Carli Dillen from Crossfit East Auckland. They were fantastic. Each contributed if not in lectures, then with the practical parts of the weekend, where we broke into smaller groups and hammered form from each of the 9 foundational movements.
So our form was scrutinized - we did thousands of air squats (ok, maybe not thousands lol) where the trainers would walk around and critique or cue. There's a few things I need to work on, particularly with pushing my knees out more in the bottom of the squat and following the overhead press session - increasing mobility in my shoulders.
I really enjoyed the coaching aspects of the course. We'd team up in twos and have to give form cues to our partner while they were doing reps of a movement, then later - in a wod. If there was something I could change to the course, it'd be to add more of the coaching training.
They also touched on Nutrition, and it wasn't the Paleo fest I thought it would be. Naturally, they encouraged the "eat meats, vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar", but there was more emphasis placed on eating whole foods and finding what works for you, which was refreshing.
In case anyone was interested, these were the wods we did..
DAY 1 WOD
3 rounds for time.
15 Thrusters (42.5/30kg)
12 Burpees
COMPLETED: 6.51 mins RX
Horrible. I was told by others who'd done the course before that we'd be doing Fran on day 1, so was surprised when this came up. To be honest, I think I would have rather done Fran lol.
* * * * *
DAY 2 WOD
8 min AMRAP.
10 Med ball cleans (10/6kg)
12 Sit ups
Can't remember how many rounds I did, but my legs were freaking burning.
And finally, the results?
WOOHOOO!!!
The sigh of relief on getting this email was huge lol.
The test comprised of 55 questions, all multichoice, but I wouldn't call it a walk in the park. Some questions were a little ambiguous, so you really had to read the question carefully.
I'd recommend this course not only to people who want to coach at an affiliate, but for anyone who wants to know more about the methodology behind the sport and learn a bit more about the ways our bodies were designed to move. Great networking opportunity too!
