OK, I have to know- do any other DMs have no idea what they’re doing, or is it just me?
I just DM’d for the first time today and had no worldbuilding, no idea who the big boss was, and no prior experience DMing.
They woke up in a field outside an inn called the Come On Inn, with no memory of how they got there or who the other people were. The last thing they could remember was when they started adventuring.
They all had something engraved or painted on their equipment somewhere, but when they (very reasonably) asked what it was, I came to the realization that I had completely forgotten to come up with one.
(cue wild improv)
Apparently, these adventurers belong to a guild called The Order of The Falcon. So that’s a thing I have to make up.
THEN, while two of them (Anton and Kara) are nice to me and go into the tavern, Vice and Ront decide to go into the bookstore next door and search for books on the Order of The Falcon.
I was not subtle beforehand on the fact that I had nothing planned.
So they go into the bookstore, Vice rolls for investigation and gets an 18. I tell him where the different types of books are located (cause Im panicking) he goes to the nonfiction and (thankfully) rolls an 8. So he’s just browsing.
Ront on the other hand, RIPS A PAGE OUT OF A BOOK (cause he’s a HEATHEN) and draws the image on it. A salesgirl approaches him and makes him buy the book- also, why are books 25gp? Are the pages gold leaf?- and he takes it over to the research desk and asks the old ladies who run it if they know of any books on The Order.
Ront is run by my friend who knows I have no plans.
Ront is doing this on purpose.
Ront better watch out.
I shift into Actor Mode™ and put on my “Old Lady Voice.” Old Lady v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y turns around, puts on her reading glasses and looks at the image, and says, “Well... I believe... I might have seen...something like that...in Aisle...12? Was it 12 or- Maud, Maud deary, do you know where we keep those?”
Maud (aka Old Lady #2) v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y walks over, v-e-r-y s-l-o-w- ok you get it, she’s taking her sweet time doing everything, and eventually! I succeed! In getting Ront so frustrated!!! He leaves!!! HA!!!
AND THEN
in battle
i had a villain who needed to stay alive
and EVERYONE KEPT HITTING HER
I basically just gave her an unlimited supply of Hit Points.
Has anyone else done that? Is that- cause if I hadn’t, she would’ve died like 4 times before the battle was over.
a n y w a y
everything went fine after that, the villain kidnapped the child which was the incentive to get everyone together, but SERIOUSLY
being a DM is hard
But it is SO MUCH FUN
I will DEFINITELY be doing this again.
I will also be making long text posts like this every time we have a session.
there ya go
