Park Avenue is a nexus of Corporate Modernism with its sleek midcentury glass curtain wall towers. Lever House, designed by SOM’s Gordon Bunshaft and Natalie de Blois features the city's first building wrapped in a glass curtain wall. Built in 1952, the building was a divergence from previous office towers that were clad in masonry with setbacks as mandated in the 1916 zoning resolution. To construct a slab tower without setbacks, Lever House only occupied 25% of the site, leaving the remaining space open to the public. In 1958 Mies van der Rohe’s Seagram Building followed this form, occupying only 40% of the site with a grand public plaza, reflecting the post-war planning ideology of towers surrounded by open space. Generally regarded as the finest example of the International Style, Seagram would influence a generation of modernist mid-century skyscrapers. Three years later a major zoning resolution would incentivize this style by offering bonuses for public amenities like open space and regulating floor area, not mass. 270 Park will be the tallest building to be intentionally demolished in the world! Last week demolition permits were filed for the Union Carbide building at 270 Park Avenue, which will be replaced by JP Morgan Chase with a new 70-story tower designed by Foster & Partners. Due to its location, the building will not be demolished using explosives. Instead, it will be covered in cocoon netting and disassembled piece by piece, first removing harmful materials, then working inside out to remove everything from doors and fixtures to the steel structural columns and concrete slabs. JP Morgan's new skyscraper will take advantage of the recent #Midtown East Rezoning, which allows developers to purchase and transfer air rights from adjacent landmarked buildings – they ave already made a deal with St. Bartholomew’s Church to purchase 550,000 square feet of air rights for $20.7 million. Currently, no renderings have been released for the new tower, which will break the world record of NYC's 612-foot tall #SingerBuilding, demolished in 1968 and replaced with One Liberty Plaza. #unioncarbide #jpmorgan #270park #modernism #modernistarchitecture #moderninteriordesign #architecture #nychistory #midtowneast #airrights #parkave #seagrambuilding #leverhouse #urbanism #nycurbanism #urbanist #historicpreservation #lpcnyc (at Union Carbide) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs55wmZlkuY/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=a5jq7tsopb4x
1952 film clip, "The All-glass Skyscraper" The building, Lever House on Park Avenue and 54th street was a highly influential skyscraper. Only the second glass curtain wall building in the city, Lever House was built in the international style by Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and featured a 24-story blue-green heat resistant glass and steel curtain wall. The building's developer, the Lever Brothers installed a $50,000 window-washing gondola – a publicity stunt to advertise Lever-brand Surf soap. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #modernism #leverhouse #gordonbunshaft #skyscraper #architecture #parkave #modernistarchitecture #som #midtownnyc #urbanplanning #curtainwall #nycurbanism #urbanism #1950s #leverhousenyc (at Lever House)
SPOTLIGHT: RICHARD DUPONT TERMINAL STAGE, 2007-08 14 MARCH 2008 - 03 MAY 2008 Richard Dupont is engaged in the centuries long traditions of figurative sculpture, yet he uses his own body as subject matter, advanced technological devices, and twenty-first century materials to achieve realistic, although drastically manipulated, human figures. Dupont has created nine self-portraits that are laterally and horizontally manipulated so that they are radically distorted and can only be seen as an accurate, complete body from one vantage point. Terminal Stage is intended as a public art piece. The involvement of the viewer is essential in the meaning of the piece. It was also conceived as a site-specific intervention. Lever House was the first modern structure built on the New York City grid, and it is a highly charged and symbolic site, emblematic of the revolutionary changes in architecture and urban space that were to take place over the half century since its construction. The lobby space confounds traditional readings of "public" and "private" as well as "interior" and "exterior" space, and Terminal Stage emphasizes the instability of a single reading of the site. The lobby space is both a "terminal" and a "stage". #richarddupont #leverhouse #art #publicart #body #distortion #ny #selfportrait #sculpture #artwork (at Lowell Ryan Projects) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgPjHq7Jj9i/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
