MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS from all of us at NYC URBANISM! The city's most famous Christmas tree –in Rockefeller Center – was first raised by construction workers on the cleared site in 1931, starting the famous tradition that continues today. Rockefeller Center accepts submissions for the perfect Norway Spruce every year, searching for a dense tree at least 75-feet tall with the right shape. This year's tree comes from the upstate town of Florida, NY and is 77 feet tall, wrapped in over 50,000 lights. The Daniel Libeskind-designed #Swarovski crystal on top of the tree is made up of 70 triangular spikes covered in three million crystals. The 900-pound tree topper is over 9 feet in diameter. The tallest tree ever was 100 feet tall, in 1999. Once the tree comes down it's used as lumber to build houses for Habitat for Humanity. On average 750,000 people visit the tree daily during the holiday season. #rockefellercenter #rockefellertree #christmas #rockefellerchristmastree #newyorkcity #architecture #30rock #construction #urbanrenewal #nyc #midtown #manhattan #rockcenter #30rock #nbcnewyork #artdeco #christmasinnyc #eastmidtown #grandcentral #skyline #skyscraper #urbanism #urbanhistory #architecture #urbanist #treetopper #libeskind #nycurbanism (at Rockefeller Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6geBNenP3u/?igshid=a20s9yha7di0
Park Avenue is a nexus of Corporate Modernism with its sleek midcentury glass curtain wall towers. Lever House, designed by SOM’s Gordon Bunshaft and Natalie de Blois features the city's first building wrapped in a glass curtain wall. Built in 1952, the building was a divergence from previous office towers that were clad in masonry with setbacks as mandated in the 1916 zoning resolution. To construct a slab tower without setbacks, Lever House only occupied 25% of the site, leaving the remaining space open to the public. In 1958 Mies van der Rohe’s Seagram Building followed this form, occupying only 40% of the site with a grand public plaza, reflecting the post-war planning ideology of towers surrounded by open space. Generally regarded as the finest example of the International Style, Seagram would influence a generation of modernist mid-century skyscrapers. Three years later a major zoning resolution would incentivize this style by offering bonuses for public amenities like open space and regulating floor area, not mass. A rendering for the Norman Foster-designed JP Morgan headquarters at 270 Park Avenue has been released. Likely the future third tallest building in the city (by roof height), the tower is projected to rise 1,425 feet with 2.5 million gross square feet. The site was home to the 707' Union Carbide Building, which is quickly being dismantled, setting a new record for the tallest building demolished in the world, breaking the record of Manhattan's 612-foot tall #SingerBuilding, demolished in 1968 and replaced with One Liberty Plaza. The Foster + Partners-designed skyscraper will be the first to take advantage of the 2017 Midtown East Rezoning, which allows developers to purchase and transfer air rights from adjacent landmarked buildings – they've already made a deal with St. Bartholomew’s Church to purchase 550,000 square feet of air rights for $20.7 million. Approved by the city, the new skyscraper will have a 10,000-square-foot, privately owned public space, in addition to $42 million in investment towards transit upgrades. Approved by the city, the new #skyscraper will have a 10,000-square-foot, privately owned public space, in addition to $42 million in investment towards transit upgrades. The rendering (above) was first released by New York YIMBY but appears to be Macklowe's Tower Fifth rendering with 270 Park rendered in. Because of this, we are skeptical it is actually an official rendering. Still, it’s likely a realistic view of how the skyscraper will transform the Park Ave skyline. #parkave #270park #architecture #tower #normanfoster #architect #midtown #parkavenue #eastmidtown #rezoning #urbanism #newyorkcity #nycarchitecture #aianyc #realestate #nycrealestate #manhattan #unioncarbide #modernism #modernistarchitecture #airrights #construction #demolition #steelworkers #nycurbanism (at 270 Park Avenue) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3pj1WlngII/?igshid=23m0p6lp6hs0
