He Returned From The Lake

@weekendwritingmarathon Flash Ficlet Promt, March 3rd.

“I don't know what you want.”

“Now that surprises me. I've made it so clear and you are so clever.” he smiled, to anyone else it held warmth, but it was really filled with deceit.

Dean stumbled back, eyes wide. He tried to tear his gaze away, but found himself utterly unable to.

The creature that had risen from the lake, in slacks and a soaked shirt, was not Castiel.

It looked like him, it sounded like him—but it was not.

Black veins pulsated under his skin. His eyes were wide, the blue stained black, unblinking. He did not look away. Dean swallowed hard as he took another step backward, his eyes fixed on that once so clear gaze. He already missed it.

“I—I don't know w—what you want,” he managed to get out around the lump that had settled in his throat.

He had never felt so much fear of a creature. Maybe it was that he wore Castiel's face. Maybe it was the glazed expression of glee. Maybe it was the 'thwumping' sound as he slid under the surface, sending dark shapes into the water supply before surfacing, turning and gliding back to shore.

Dean wasn't sure, he didn't care. But this creature, the Leviathan, was terrifying. It had his stomach churning and his heart thumping. His nerves were bared electric wires in a rainstorm.

“Oh Dean. That surprises us. We've made it so clear.”

The creature's voice was awful; multi-layered, harsh and smooth, high and low, evil and humorous.

A smile touched his lips; lips that used to belong to Castiel, who had taken them from Jimmy Novak. Dean felt sick.

“And, Dean, you are so very clever. How could you not know?”

He took a pace closer to Dean, the face of the angel he knew so well wild and distorted by the creatures that resided within him. If you disregarded the blackened tracks of oil-like-blood under the surface of his skin, you might think his smile genuine, but it only made Dean shudder.

He already missed his best friend, his angel. Castiel.

“We want you Dean. We always have.”

The words, sounding in concert from one throat sent a shudder through Dean, both joy and revulsion. But the smile on the leviathan's lips was wrong. It felt like a trap.

Castiel would never want him.

Not the way he wanted Castiel. He knew that, had always known that.

“Dea—“

The leviathan’s words were cut off by the sharp report of a gun.

Smoke drifted across Dean's vision as a black hole appeared on Castiel's forehead, right between the eyes, blossoming with oozing, rancid filth.

“Th—thank you S—Sam,” Castiel, the true Castiel whispered. He fell to the ground, violent orange lighting him up from within. Not bones, but swirling sludge glowed through his skin.

He was nothing more than a heap of unmoving, slime covered, empty angel vessel.

“C—Cas,” Dean whispered, watching the light in the angel's eyes fade, fade to nothingness.

Castiel was gone.

And Sam had killed him.

Dean rounded on Sam, fury like rocket fuel coursing through him.

Sam stepped back. “I— Crowley. He—he had the Colt. I—I didn't think it would—“

“Dean.”

Dean spun on his heel, his brother forgotten. He was at Castiel's side in two strides. He dropped to his knees in the foul smelling black liquid that had flowed freely from Cas’ nose and mouth, the wound in his skull. It had stained his sodden shirt and skin black.

“Cas?” he whispered. He lifted Cas’ head tenderly in his arms, terrified of hurting him more, terrified that Cas would leave him for good.

“They—they weren't wrong.” Castiel coughed. His lucid blue eyes rolled up to meet Dean's, completely him once more. “I—I thought I had made it clear,” he broke off, closing his eyes and stilling for a long moment, making the breath catch in Dean's chest.

Cas blinked his eyes open again and Dean sighed in relief. “All this time, I thought I'd made it obvious.” Dean was shaking his head, not comprehending. “I fell for you Dean. Everything I've done, I've done for you. I love you Dean Winchester.”

Dean frowned and swallowed. This—this couldn't be real.

Castiel looked up at him, beseeching. His eyes were a different blue than Jimmy's had been; ethereal, glowing.

“I love you,” Castiel said, this time, choked and desperate. His eyes dropped as he coughed, black spatters staining his lips.

“O—Oh. Okay. Okay.” Dean nodded.

His heart felt as if someone had taken it up, was clutching it in their palm, squeezing gently.

It felt warm.

He stroked his hand through Castiel's wet, flattened hair, but spoke to Sam. “We need to get the bullet out. Now.” He could see that livid orange glow behind Cas' eyes, beginning to kill him as well as the God forsaken Leviathan.

“You. You are not allowed to leave me,” Dean told Cas, leaning down and pressing his forehead against Cas' hair. He touched his lips to Cas’ skin, bloody and blackened.

“You are not allowed to go, Cas,” he muttered, holding the angel tight.

god!castiel : the calm evil. the one that sends a chill up your spine with his tone. the one that has a soft voice as he describes how he's gonna kill you, almost as if he's comforting you. the one who glares at you and makes your hair stand on end. the one who eventually just removes your ability to speak because he can't stand your voice.

leviathan!castiel : the mad-man evil. the one that tortures for hours and hours, just for shits and giggles. the one who smiles constantly and talks casually as he drives a knife deeper and deeper into your skin. the one who laughs as he hears you scream and cry. the one who doesn’t kill you because its more fun to leave you wishing for death.

lucifer!castiel : the dorky evil. the one who makes jokes as he threatens you. the one who carves a smiley face into your skin. the one who explains how he’s going to hurt you with over-exaggerated facial expressions. the one who laughs at his dumb puns while he slashes your skin.
