Hello! I'm working on making Camilla's New Year's outfit from Fire Emblem Heroes for Ikkicon this year. I was hoping to get a little bit of insight on how to make the kimono coat thingy she wears (the red one with the funky patterns). In your opinion, what's the best way to get the gold and black pattern on to the coat and what would be the best way to make the coat so it could sit comfortably off the shoulders like she wears it? Thanks a bunch!
Fabric paint would be the easiest way to add all the designs, using stencils and masking to get crisp details. A similar alternative would be screen printing the design on. Another option would be heat transfer vinyl. Otherwise, applique.
For the thick band of gold along the shoulder, I would probably use a gold fabric and do that as an applique or colour-blocking.
Having it sit comfortably is a bit of a challenge. One thing I can think of is adding rubber inserts to the shoulder part so it doesn’t slip down easily, having the garment fitted where you add the inserts will help it grip. Otherwise, you could have an elastic loop that grips to the arm that is stitched into the garment.
I think the garment would want to rest at the elbow. So you could work with that by adding interfacing into the part that drapes over the shoulder. That way it is resting at the elbow and the rest is sort of floating because of the interfacing support.
Also if the garment is fitted so that the back isn’t too loose, the tension should help hold the garment in place. Basically, as long as your arms are slightly in front of you, it won’t have the give to slide down. It does make movement a little limited, so if you go this route you’ll want to test it with a mockup to see what is comfortable!
Hope this gives you some inspiration!
