'not all of us can be handsome outlaws. some of us have to be rugged.'
— @levinway .
❛ if i were beside myself, there would be two of me. ❜
brows furrowed, clive stops in his tracks and turns to face cid. the idea of having two of his kind around all but makes him shudder; he likes cid, despite—or maybe also because of—his many quirks and peculiarities. still, more than one cid might just be too much for valisthea to handle.
and for clive.
"is this the point where you tell me about a long-lost twin of yours?" it's an attempt at a jest, though clive knows cid is certainly better at it than he will ever be.
the knight and the moth.
"y'did a good job with this place," cid grumbled — patting clive's shoulder as he strode up beside him. the hideaway had a nice 360 view of the lake and provided a strategic advantage to the inhabitants. that, and there were a great many new faces that he did not recognize. "i might even say you got inspired by a certain . . . someone."
❛ I CAN'T CLAIM ANY CREDIT , CID , ❜ the newly appointed leader declines, an appreciative smile brightening his features . Before the old Cid could claim humility, Clive extends a hand ; ticking off each contributor on a finger.
❛ Without Gav , we would not have discovered The Invincible in the first place . Otto and Charon helped arrange transportation of goods, and lumber through the deadlands . Tarja managed our wounded , and escorted our people to safety. Not to mention Geoffroy ; always battling the blight waters that deteriorates our foundation . That is to say - it was the team you pulled together that made this happen . I can't imagine how we would have achieved this without their efforts, and without your guidance . ❜

❛ now have some soup. ❜ — cid, the workaholic, telling his daughter mid, a fellow workaholic (wonder who she got that from...) to eat.
soup? of all things? mid puts her pen down and lifts herself out of her chair enough to sniff at the bowl of soup. her stomach gurgles. did she have breakfast today? she can't quite remember, head full of ideas. if she doesn't jot them down the moment they come to her, she's always afraid they might slip through her fingers and be lost forever. she can't risk that.
"gee, thanks, dad." despite it all, she grins at cid, gets out of her seat properly and presses a big, wet kiss to his cheek. she has to strain on her tip toes to do so. "give me one more moment. i'm almost done with that... "
Five years. Has it really been five years?. // You know. Heh.

Time had been but a blur for Clive, ever since the day the first Mothercrystal fell and the hideaway that Cid had built was destroyed in tandem. Everything that the refugees had built crumbled into dust before them, and with their leader incapacitated, the young warrior had no choice but to help pick up the pieces and slowly rebuild. The years that followed passed in the blink of an eye, time spent hiding and building a new hideaway, biding their time before they were able to strike their next target. Clive had been patient, but he could sense the shifting of the winds as the Blight gains more ground with each passing day. They would need to act and soon...
His expression softens as the familiar voice reaches his ears, the corners of his lips turning upward slightly.
"It feels so incredibly long yet also so short a time, doesn't it?" Deep blue eyes shift toward Cid. "So much has changed since then, for better or worse."
He stands a bit straighter, expression softening as though deep in thought. He then lifts a hand, sparks of lightning and electricity hovering over his palm. "Do you regret it?"
“if i asked what you’ve lost, would you answer?”

joshua startles slightly, much as he tries not to, baby blue eyes lifting up to peer at cid from beneath his hood. he hasn't looked at ease since the moment he first set foot inside the hideaway, shying away from anyone who tries to greet him with a polite, avoidant nod. everyone is kind here, albeit guarded, and the displaced prince isn't sure how exactly to swallow any of it.
they aren't the undying, they don't look at him as though he's an idol. everything here feels painfully human, and there's something in cid that makes joshua miss his father.
❝ I'm sure there are others who have lost far more, ❞ the answer is a weak one, a cop-out, and joshua knows it. he can't remember the last time he'd truly been around others who weren't his fervent protectors. ❝ they likely need your time and focus more than I. ❞
"Are you always this grumpy in the morning?" // I need an excuse to use my Waloed era!Cid verse.

Barnabas simply groans, fingers rubbing at his clearly tired eyes.
"The light of the sun never fails to assault my senses," he murmurs. "However, this day deigns to remind me of my...many meetings with my advisors."
Meetings that he feels are rather pointless, but he cannot neglect his duties, even while on the brink of war.
He sighs and closes his eyes for a moment, mentally preparing for the onslaught of the day.
