We have the pleasure of celebrating Alexander "Lex" Watson today!

Born on January 29th, 1943 in Perth, West Australia, Alexander "Lex" Watson was a historian, political scientist, and LGBTQ rights activist.

Lex Watson took part in and helped put together many groups including Campaign Against Moral Persecution (CAMP), the Gay Rights Lobby (GRL now known as the NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby), the AIDS Action Committee which later became the AIDS Council of NSW (ACON), as well as helped to push for the decriminalization of homosexuality.

I needed to refine some of my anger so I felt the need to rewatch this video. I NEED people to watch this video. Lex Watson is such an important figure in Australian Queer history and I think more people should watch this video from 1976 (the date on the title card is wrong this video is pre '78 mardi gras) to compare and contrast to how things are today

In high school studies of modern Australian history I think there is something to be said for looking at sociological evolution of our recent (in historical terms) past, and that our own television archives are an underutilized resource.

We have a good history of television programs getting to grips with issues large sections of the population would either ignore or prefer didn't exist, and to be able to see the evolution of these issues over the decades of recent history would be a powerful mechanism for assisting students to gain perspective and frames of reference for the tide of sociological development currently underway in a much more visceral sense, to see how things have changed or in fact not changed.

The significance of this video in considering the state of gay rights in 1970s  Australia speaks for itself, I highly recommend this entire channel.
