Crab Cakes and Cakewalks with William Dorsey Swann
Born some time in March, 1860, in Hancock, Maryland under slavery, William Dorsey Swann would become a pivotal icon in shaping Queer culture in the US.
Swann organized Balls between 1880 and 1890, sending secret invitations at places like the local YMCA with the majority of members being formerly enslaved men who would get together and dance in silk and satin dresses. The group would later call themselves "The House of Swann," essentially becoming the first House of Drag in the US.
It was written that on his 30th birthday party, police officers showed up to shut down and arrest Swann and his guest. He was charged with impersonating a female marking it as the first documented case in US History. At the time of the arrest, Swann was quoted as saying "You is no gentlemen," and his resistance to the arrest has gone down as one of the first, if not thee first, instances of resistance in the name of Gay Rights.
He was convicted of "Keeping a Disorderly House," in 1896 (which was code for running a brothel), and sentenced to 10 months in jail. Upon his request to be pardoned (but ultimately denied), he became the first person documented in the pursuit of legal and political action to defend the LGBTQ Communities Rights.
An often skipped key figure in American Queer History, William Dorsey Swann can and should be credited with so much of what we know today. So to commemorate and and further his legacy and story, we are making some incredible
1 lb Crab Meat (Canned or Fresh)
Juice from 1 Lemon (about 2 tbsp)
In a large bowl, mix items carefully to avoid breaking up the crab meat too much.
Once combined, portion out the crab meat mixture into roughly 4oz patties.
In a pan, warm oil over Medium-High heat until ready. Roughly enough to cover the bottom of the pan.
Working in small batches so as not to overcrowd the pan, fry patties until golden brown (roughly 3-5 minutes on each side.)
Leave to drain excess oil on a rack or paper towels.
Top with tarter sauce or a squeeze of Lemon.
