Today marks one year since the episode Fog of War (2.06) aired--one year since the fandom was introduced to the spectacular Commander Lexa, played by the equally spectacular Alycia Debnam-Carey.

Now, I didn’t start watching The 100 until this past July. I honestly hadn’t heard of it until I saw twitter explode in FEELS when Alycia and Eliza took those pictures together at SDCC. After that, I knew I had to watch the show. I am so glad I did.

When Lexa was introduced, I already knew who she was and that her and Clarke get pretty close. But I wasn’t prepared for the INGENIOUS character that was Lexa, who quickly became one of my favorites on the show.

Here was a character who was young, female, and IN POWER. This is one of my favorite things about the show--how the majority of the people in power or leader roles are WOMEN, a stark contrast to the world we live in today. But not

 only was she a leader, but she was a respected one at that. No one doubted her, no one disrespected her, no one objectified her, no one undermined her authority. She was a leader, a great one at that, and people accepted it, just like they would with a man in power. Throughout the second season, she makes extremely difficult choices, ones that she makes to protect her people. With every choice she makes, you can see it takes a toll on her. She starts to lose herself more and more--it is only through Clarke that she is able to not lose herself completely (until that absolutely heartbreaking moment in the season finale). But, let’s move on to what else I love about Lexa...

I love how emotional she is. Although it is not usually seen, there are so many undertones that show how much she actually cares. This is, in great part, to the fantastic acting by Alycia Debnam-Carey, who’s subtle mannerisms make the character so human and contrast Lexa’s tough exterior. Just look at her EYES, and you will see how they say so much in a scene where she says so little (or says something opposite of what she is feeling). Or when she IS feeling, the eyes say so much more. You can see her vulnerability in her eyes. Which reminds you that this is a young adult, a young woman, who has to carry the burden of leading not only her own tribe, but all twelve of them. And while leading, she has to keep the peace. She has to protect the treaty. 

Let’s also bring up the fact that she is a queer character. The first (we knew of) on the show. And although it is a part of her identity, it does not define her. It does not influence what people think of her. Let’s also be immensely proud that she doesn’t fall in any stereotypical lesbian tropes. This is another time to thank Alycia, because her portrayal of Lexa is so raw and layered. I can’t imagine anyone else playing her. Honestly, no one could play her as well as Alycia.
