Author interview with @lextenou on story “How to Choose” 

What inspired your Supernova story? 

One night, I had a dream. I dreamed I was a cow named Elsie. Wait, that's not the right dream. The original plotline for the story played out in a dream and I woke up and was a grunting wordless zombie until I was able to get it down. The original draft took me about a month of weekends to work on. The second draft took three days. I cut out some things. It wasn't feasible to have a scene where Robin is punched in the face, no matter how much he deserved it. I also had to cut out a Swan Queen kiss in the original release which has been put back in. 

Tell us about your writing history for fandom/general, and have you participated in SQ big bang or writing challenges prior?

I've been writing for over twenty years, both fanfiction and original works. I've a number of unfinished stories that I go back and revisit to get up to par and sometimes finish. I've participated in a few SQ Big Bangs and various challenges over the years, and have enjoyed every single one of them.

What is an interesting fact about you personally or related to your writing process? 

I have to have music playing. The first step to being able to write something out, for me, is to have the right playlist curated. For this story, the soundtrack was heavy on artists like Nightwish, Delerium, and Nena and Kim Wilde's "Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime".

What other stories have you written? 

I've written a few stories! Of them, its hard to pick a favorite. The reason I write is because I want these stories to exist so I can go back later and read them. Of my own works for Swan Queen, I think my current favorite is probably "Emma, Protector of the Realm". I have a huge backstory and world in my head surrounding it, which will hopefully be explored in future installments. My current favorite author is ShinjiShazaki. I've been reading her work for over ten years and I've had the chance to see her writing grow and change. My current favorite story from her is an original one called "Debtor Knight", which has a feel that hearkens back to when there'd be a new epic uber Xena fic out every other week. Her other works, like "Wolves of the North" (Shingeki no Kyojin) and "Chigai" (Avatar: The Last Airbender) are available online.

What is your favorite type of fanfiction?

Is there anything else you'd like people to know about you?

I read about 50,000 words of fanfiction every day.

Lex, I feel like this may be the first time in something like a decade that our fandoms are going to converge--mostly because it’s an original piece so I am creating the thing to have a fandom for.

I’m kinda feeling that way after accidentally causing this turn of events.  Maybe we’ll all discover that bitterness and exhaustion were our true friends all along after going through whatever team building thing they can come up with.

When I realized that I don’t have to give a shit about what’s actually canon. It’s useful for reference, but fanfic made me realize that if I don’t like something, I can literally pretend like it never happened

…which is why I’m more than 60,000 words into a Life Is Strange fic where the ending of the original game never happened, because fuck that bullshit.

It’s mostly entry level customer service stuff. Their HR departments are weirdly dependent on it.

What’s kind of funny is that I looked up non-compete clauses and the first thing that came up was “California does not abide by that nonsense and does not enforce it.”  I’m mostly just floored (still, several hours later) that this conversation and all its contents actually happened.
