The Sumakh is the traditional carpet of the Lezgian people. They are typically ‘pileless’ and thus thinner than other carpets woven in the region. They are famous for their beautifully bright colors and detailed and unique geometrical designs.
During the soviet era, mass production of carpets, including the sumakh has resulted in the decline of the artform. However, many organizations and the people themselves are reviving the carpet by supporting local weavers both economically and artistically.
