Hey is anyone able to check out what I've got below the read more and tell me if I removed enough of the emotional charge from my reaction to respond to a friend? US Politics related.
They told me the other day that they haven't been keeping up with anything political, after I had mentioned the DEI rollbacks in regards to our chat about work/jobs. They had asked me "DEI? What's that?" And ever since I have been in this spiral. I fear I have to cut off a friend, but I'm not trying to do things impulsively.
These first two paragraphs you're about to read are ones i am NOT sending. (Wrote one the day of and the other a day later) The third one is the one I am considering sending. I'm looking for feedback. Should I include more of the things I initially mentioned? Or keep it short and sweet like I was planning? Im not trying to scold this person but my instinct has been to angrily react.
[Again, not sharing this one] "Honestly I find it hard to believe that someone can willfully keep their head out of politics when there's such a wide spread of things effecting multiple different groups of people right now, like genuinely that's a privilege I don't have and don't understand. So many people I love are reeling over what the future holds for them, myself included. I get that media fatigue is a thing and that we shouldn't be trying to take in information from every corner we can find it, but to choose passivity right now? That doesn't make me feel like you're someone I can safely engage with. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim."
[Also one I'm not sharing] "Damn dude I'm really disappointed to hear that. This isn't a time where we can choose to be neutral without actively aiding the oppressor through passivity. Too many people I love are affected by this (myself included) for me to have the privilege of not educating myself. The information is everywhere."
[Okay this is the one I'm thinking of sending] "I'm really sad to hear that, being able to keep my mind out of politics is a privilege I don't have. I encourage you to look into some things, if not for yourself, for the people you love."
Because like if they still choose to not educate themself, then at least I got to speak my part before I say goodbye 😭
