Fraser crashes at Augustin’s on Paddy’s advice when his Paris accommodation falls through.

just finished rereading my Terror fics in between delayed trains, and it’s still wild to me that the best thing i ever wrote is a niche glaciology fic that a handful of people read years and years ago. writing is a weird experience

I'd love to read the North Wind fic again! Thanks for answering my question, I'll have a look at those folktales and illustrations. I'd never heard about Les Boréades before this, but I just looked up the costumes and I can see why you were inspired by it!

finished writing the final entry to the Terror academic verse yesterday, as a birthday gift for @flurgburgler , and while i doubt i’ll post it, i did need to write down this completion somewhere, because it has been 7 years since I wrote the first story (!) and i feel like there’s been a lifetime in between

Lichtenberg’s reindeer moss

I lay waiting, reads the message, between turf-face and demesne wall, between heathery levels and glass-toothed stone

Paddy, Eoin and Fraser climb a mountain. Eoin is carrying the weight of his unprocessed attraction to his best friend along with the aftermath of a dramatic accident; Paddy is carrying the sort of rucksack that would topple most people; Fraser is carrying years of frustration towards the other two. It goes about as well as you'd expect.

something something about how my least read fics are also the ones on which i continue, after many years, to receive the occasional heartfelt, thoughtful, intelligent comment that fic writers dream of, & which will make me gaze softly in the distance for hours after i’ve read it

Do you have any favourite folktales that inspire your writing? I remember, years ago, reading a fic of yours about the North Wind (it really stayed with me) was it inspired by a folktale or did you get inspiration from somewhere else?

Oh definitely a few! East of the Sun and West of the Moon is a particular favourite. I'd drafted a Jonsa fic based on Six Swans where all the Stark kids apart from Sansa got turned into wolves. Along with @sappsorrow we'd written a fic for Trust inspired by Tam Lin. I'm partial to Kay Nielsen's fairy tale illustrations, and Gustave Doré's (and therefore, Frenchly, to Perrault's fairy tales).

But for the North Wind fic, I'd been inspired by an exhibit I'd seen at a museum where they showed very haunting dark and sleek modern-day costumes for the opera Les Boréades, a 17th century opera by Rameau about a queen who must marry a descendant of the North Wind.

(I don't think I ever reposted that particular fic but if anyone wants it I can try to give it an edit and put it back up!)

re: your last reblog, super super happy to hear there's a sort-of sequel in the works to schrödinger's grenade! i discovered your terror fics earlier this year and every work of yours that i've read has been excellent. definitely cheering you on because i'm so so seated for whatever you have planned next

thank you!! I wrote schrödinger over the summer while on a week-long solo hike — strangely it takes a lot more time to write a fic of a similar length while working full-time and moving flats (and co-writing other fics, admittedly). I appreciate the encouragement, i 100% need it 😆

i think these two fics are a lot closer in tone to my Terror writing than anything else i’ve written since the Terror, it’s been satisfying to revisit that sort of atmosphere and character-dynamics. favourite cosy old jumper vibes.
