Hi! It's almost Halloween time so I would love to get a recommendation for 5 horror movies from you!
an ex-cop who is really just some guy looks for a missing girl who was obsessed with an urban legend, and stumbles upon a cult
(absolute favourite! flawed for sure, but brimming with ideas and oozing atmosphere, i’ve liked it more with each rewatch. the half hour long cold open is a little horror film in itself)
set in south korea, a team of paranormal experts relocate a grave to break a curse, nothing goes as planned
(veeery endearing, charismatic characters & a riveting plot, with an underlying reflexion on landscapes natural and cultural and colonial, on inheritance and religious belief.)
a woman alone in a house in the middle of nowhere hears a knock at the door.
(the opening sequence and its conclusion spooked me in the best way. abuses of a couple tropes but it remains deeply original, and the cast is committed and they’re all very good. Gwilym Lee hi!)
A pregnant woman is haunted by a sinister presence
(of all the horror films about disastrous pregnancies these last few years in this post roe world, i think this was the best, thematically & aesthetically, with a very good protagonist. honourable mention to The First Omen though, and nell tiger free who should be in a million more horror films)
A woman renting an airbnb in Detroit finds it already occupied by Bill Skarsgård.
(yes yes the discourse about weapons, we’ve all read it. i don’t need to see it to know it replicates the issues re: the depiction of monstrosity in barbarian. this being said. until its resolution, barbarian is solid horror, i love the airbnb-gone-wrong premise, the initial duo of characters, and the jarring 180 the film does around the middle mark)
honourable mention to It Follows because it remains to this day the horror film that scared me the most!
