Why Lhasa De Sela Matters by Fred Goodman is a heart opener into the universe of a worldly artist. Having lived in Mexico, San Francisco, Montreal, Marseille and singing in Spanish, French and English, she harnessed an eclectic range of musical influences whilst uniquely whittling each one away in finding her own. Unable to play an instrument and with little music theory, she could conjure an epic to tell her story with a whistle. A singer who lived as a poet, a childhood home that included a school bus, a career that began as background music in the noisy cafes of Montreal, she quickly evolved into the rarest and most dramatic of songbirds that captivated the city and beyond. Then a brief stint with the family circus before returning to her music, she was an auteur of unwavering integrity whose relationships flourished and withered accordingly.
